Wow. So basically the president threw a tantrum and forced the TV channel to shut down due to his own sense of entitlement. That really sucks.

The rise of fascist scum around the world is arguably an even-greater threat than COVID-19 right now.

I was actually in the Philippines with my dad back in January (and went to Tokyo on our way there just for leisure). My dad was interviewed by ABS-CBN for a story they were doing regarding education, and he grew up there around the first time the network was shut down by the government. He can tell you from experience that Duterte is becoming a dictator in the vein of Ferdinand Marcos.

Indeed, didn't Ferdinand Marcos shut down Voltes V? This reminds me of that.

You are correct. It's a real shame, because the Philippines is a beautiful country. Manila happens to be my favorite city there, and that's where my dad went to school (at International School Manila - or ISM).

I lived in the philippines near Manila for 7 years in the mid 70's to early 80's when Marcos and his wife Imelda (the shoe lady) were in their heyday and was told as an american not to voice my extreme distaste of Marcos in public or I could be deported. Please tell me what-if anything has changed between now and then?

The president already forgives ABS-CBN for his previous complaints, but leaves the issue to the congress as they have the sole power to grant congressional franchises, which is a requirement for free-to-air broadcasters.

https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2020/02/27/1996456/duterte-accepts-abs-cbn-apology-congress-decide

I think the network has answered all the dirty laundry that had been said about them, but the representatives of the house are to decide by their conscience.

Regardless of the franchise issue, my personal opinion is that ABS-CBN also has a fault in this. I've heard from friends that the network is still reluctant to acquire anime shows to stream online, because they say that it is "too expensive", when they seem to be ignoring the rise of Netflix, or even the YouTube-hosted services of Muse and Medialink.

The Congress rubberstamps whatever Duterte wants.
And ABS-CBN licensed Cardcaptor Sakura and dubbed it, so how are they at fault for their station being shut down, other than telling the truth about Duterte? Some anime IS overpriced, and stations with limited resources can only license so much, but that has nothing to do with this story. ABS-CBN was not shut down because they refused to license more anime. That's sheer nonsense.

Thank you for covering this, ANN.

Regarding JMmelegrito's post: The issue here is no private company should be forced to kowtow and earn a president's "forgiveness" to have their franchise renewed, especially when they underwent the proper processes. And even if the decision is made to the lower house, majority of the representatives are trying to earn Duterte's favor ( his own son is there, for god's sake), including the house speaker (Duterte's vp candidate). Don't paint the narrative that this is out of the soon-to-be dictator's hands.

The decision will be held today, so we will soon know if our legislative body has some semblance of independence from the executive. Wishing for the best but bracing for the worst.

On the talk of ABS-CBN's franchise renewal, it was denied just an hour ago. I still have hopes that the network will be back somehow regardless of the government's "final decision" for not renewing the network.

I grew up with Cardcaptor Sakura. The first anime was aired on ABS-CBN back in the early 2000s. Just seeing the network that made me went deeper into the CCS franchise and CLAMP works into all of this is just sad.

Stay strong, Kapamilya

Hm... A thing that doesn't usually come up in this discussion is the fact the issue of franchise renewal came up a few years before Duterte. They could have avoided this whole thing if a bill was passed then. There were a few proposed at the time, but none passed. Why wasn't one passed then and why didn't they complain? I don't know.

ABS-CBN is not 'silenced or dead' to the degree you might think. They mainly lost rights to broadcast on public frequencies. However, they are still publishing on social media and on their own sites. ANC (their 24H news channel) is still on-air AFAIK. They also started a cable network channel called The Kapamilya Channel. Heck, I'm watching coverage regarding the bill rejection from their own news site right now. But I do agree that this whole thing has been ridiculous and they should be given the renewal. Personally, I see this is less an attack on press freedom and more an attack on the company, if not on the family that owns it.

As for the House, most of them are pandering sycophants. It doesn't matter who is in charge, they will bend over backwards, do whatever, and grovel at the feet of who is just so they would be in a 'favorable position'. Most Filipinos are aware how easily politicians 'jump ship' to whichever party is the strongest in the current administration. We have a terrm for that: balimbing. Duterte wouldn't be as 'fascistic' if all these panderers didn't go by the mantra of 'We Find Ways'.

Hoooh... Now that's out of my system, wasn't CardCaptor Sakura also on GMA at some point? They might try to pick that up if ABS-CBN truly can't air them with this going on. Or would that be impossible with regards to licensing?

ABS aired the first CCS anime during the early 2000s, GMA then aired the anime around 2010s. Slight OT: I prefer the ABS dub of the anime rather than the latter.

Not surprised at all since the president already warned them last year
