I feel like adapting the original manga more faithfully in a live action Akira would be difficult. Otomo had creative control over the original Akira movie, and the manga had yet to finish during that point. For myself having seen Akira back in the day when it was still relatively fresh I thought it concluded decently and there wasn't a whole lot of material I would have liked to have seen fleshed out. I feel it's story would adapt well to live action, with maybe some of the initial exposition hurried along a bit.
I think diving too deep into the manga, which greatly extended plot points of most of the characters, would just cause a lot of convolution in something that realistically would be a stand-alone release and need to come in at roughly ~ two hours of run time.

The only announcement they really need to make to reassure fans is that they found a competent screenwriter and a script is complete. More importantly, we need to know who that writer is to instill us with confidence. I'm still not sold on Waititi as the director either.
