They're still going at their usual slow pace, though there were some additional delays recently when they changed owners. Since the Evangelion movies, they've released the Kaidohmaru and Read or Die OVAs plus some catalog titles (Dark Myth, Orguss 02, Fist of the North Star, etc.). And they're co-producing some upcoming titles like Dead Leaves and Ninja Scroll 2.

Manga Entertainment what a horrible company with a asinine business model! I always am relieved when I discover they did not secure the rights to the series I like. Why? Look at how much they butchered Dangaioh OVAs! If you are not familiar with this title, suffice to say they took three OVAs which run 180 minutes and EDITED the contents and overall meaning/presentation of the series into one HORRIBLY DUBBED movie that runs approx. 70 minutes! Pardon me... but...
Please anyone... do the math, what is wrong here?!! Oh maybe people like myself get justifiably irrate because Manga DELETES = EDITS OUT over 50% of the content!! Again, WTF? You heard me right over 50% of this OVA series was DELETED by Manga. I bet most people were not aware of this. Oh and they never take the time to explain why, because if you have seen the original series and then Manga's crap version, you too would wonder what are they stupid? In addition to their slower than molassis release of titles they have the gall to edit the contents of the original work. Unbelievable and unacceptable. Just imagine your favorite title/series and then imagine Manga getting the rights to it and .... editing it and marketing ONLY that version for sale. It is enough to make you want to scream/vomit from disgust. I have tried calling and emailing them, btw... their email feature online does not work. Also if you email them, you will never receive ANY relies regardless of which department you contact. How disappointing, Manga Enter. just does not care what the fans think, want and/or are willing to support! Manga Entertainment is a company IMO that slaps together slipshod products, and releases whatever the heck they think the average consumer will unwittingly buy. How sad and unfortunate for fans everywhere.... Last edited by mahoro on Fri May 07, 2004 6:45 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I can't justify what they did with Dangaioh, but on your other accounts you have to keep in mind that they aren't ADV, they're a relativly small company by todays standards and will suffer a lot of set backs and delays when trying to get things together. You never did say what happened when you called them by the way.

Manga Ent. like most anime distro companies have their mistakes, but no one can claim they aren't getting better. Read or Die and End of Eva prove that. *the dubs to those two were great, as well as the dvd itself*

One thing I don't understand about Manga...they seem to have a distinct preference for those adults-only hyperviolent sorts of anime...yet they nabbed Castle of Cagliostro...which...okay, it's directed by Miyazaki. That should say more than enough.
Of course...not that I'm complaining...I utterly adore the movie and I think Manga gave it a good enough dub. But still...the apparent clash of styles just stands out in my mind too much. Last edited by Nagisa on Fri Jan 02, 2004 6:09 pm; edited 1 time in total |

If I received irrate e-mails filled to the brim with emoticons and screaming emotions, I probably wouldn't reply either. Like Emerje said, Manga is a small company that doesn't have the time and staff to sit around answering e-mails all day. Sure, some of their releases were pretty shoddy, but they've released some good products as well. For example, Perfect Blue, X (movie), Castle of Cagliostro...
If they want to compete with the big boys, they're going to get better. They have to. So just be patient and import the stuff they screw up. Compared to the stuff they haven't screwed up, it's not that much. |

I know some people reported all sorts of glitches with the End of Evangelion DVD.
I tried it on my own player (Toshiba SD-1600) and I noticed but one irregularity, and that was the student film-level pretensiousness of much of the second half of the film, but that problem doesn't really have anything to do with Manga Entertainment. |

When I called Manga they gave me lipservice (reminds me of evilbay btw)… which was just like when I spoke with a live representative at their AX booth. Both times the reps said we did this because this is what we felt was best for the market and this is what the fans wanted. Riiiight. I for one would love to know how they test-marketed this nonsense.
As for Manga being a small company, I will say this, if they cannot swim then sink already! Other companies are pushing the envelope and responding to the comments of the fans/consumers. How? Well Viz (yes I know they are the largest) for example, is releasing their newer series (Inuyasha) and long overdue older series (i.e. beloved series like Maison Ikkoku) in box sets. Fans kept on demanding it and even Viz could not ignore the bootleg versions flooding the market. At least now, in Vizs situation they are making the fans take note and offering a product to buy NOW as oppose to waiting and waiting and waiting for a tentative release date. And for the record regarding Eva and the “quality”, I encourage you to reexamine the transfer on the dvd copies you have it really was not very good and neither was the sound. Someone did a comparison on the frame ratio done for Eva and it was lacking (I don’t have their url but I will look for it). I am bias I will say it proudly, ADV also has their faults too, just look at how they screwed up a great series like City Hunter. *eyes rolling* Peace. |

The overall video/sound quality problems you had can be blamed on Gainax, who have a tendancy to give US companies and the like masters which aren't-so-good. You can only really work with what you have, so cut them a bit of slack.
How did ADV screw up City Hunter? "As for Manga being a small company, I will say this, if they cannot swim then sink already! " Who's to say they aren't supporting themselves just fine? There's plenty of people who buy their releases. |

Is that really fair? That's like saying, "if you aren't doing well living then die already." They're swimming just fine, it's unreasonable to expect them to push products the same way as the bigger companies. I highly doubt that others would be interested in half the titles they push, if they were then they would outbid them for the licenses. Just be happy with what you're getting. Emerje |

ADV screwed up CH with the (1) the packaging, (2)labeling Ryo's name incorrectly, it is NOT Joe you morons at ADV, (3) the release of the series in the box sets. Look at the prices for the licensed ones and then do some research on the bootlegs. You can get all three CH TV seasons NOW and with the original packaging artwork, proper labeling and cheaper. As for the quality of the transfer it is pretty good considering they are bootlegs....
As for my previous comment "sink", yes I am harsh but not unduly so. Yes they are a small company, so what? ADV, Viz and AnimEigo all started the same way, but they are working hard and FAST to release quality dvds most that are reasonably priced, and quickly. My comment “sink” addresses how I feel about competition, IMO if the company is not meeting the needs of its fans/paying customers, someone else will. Look at how fast bootlegs get released, it makes you wonder how can they do it? Yes the quality is less but these companies do not have to deal with the dubbing, which like or not, takes longer to redo and release. Also, keep in mind how FEW titles Manga has to release and the fact that they have very few NEW titles to introduce. With these factors in mind, I for one wonder… hey, what IS with the delays? You don’t hear anything helpful from the reps and when you visit the site it is so… outdated it isn’t even worth the effort visiting anymore. Thus, my problem with Manga can be summed up why doesn’t some other company merge them? You claim Manga is “doing just fine”, how can they be when they do not have any new titles that are in demand? We all know consumers in general are fickle they like what is in demand what is popular… anime & manga is no exception. Although I no longer have access to a Manga representative to interview and verify these comments I am making, the way I use to when I was in college, I doubt they are very profitable. I am remain skeptical, enough so that I believe if they were a publicly traded, someone would be in trouble. As you may know, shareholders are very unforgiving and the numbers on a company’s finance statements do NOT lie (unless they were altered, i.e. Enron anyone). Unfortunately, Manga is not a publicly traded company… otherwise we could verify just how well they are swimming. Lastly, I am not grateful for inferior, slipshod products that are released slower than molasses. Why should I tolerate and/or "accept it or be grateful”? That is just asinine. |
