Hello Kitty's stock in trade is sweetness and cuteness; Mainstream Hollywood has been moving away from un-ironic use of both in their children's films. "In on it", even lighthearted, seems to be a more standard baseline than straightforward joy and pleasure. This film will either be a strong deviation from this norm with sincerity (not holding my breath), painted with Inside Out's brush of humour ( and God willing it's done with the same finesse), or a trainwreck of Nancy Drew meets Mario Brothers proportions. |

Hollywood is already asking for another franchise to destroy and Sonic hasn't even hit theaters yet. This is becoming a nightmare for fans of Japanese media.

It's Hello Kitty.... The only thing this film has to be is cute. If it's cute, then great, no part of this franchise will be harmed. ... so please for all that's good on this Earth, at least make sure it is cute looking! |

As a kid in the 80s: "I gotta get my Fruity Pebbles! Hello Kitty's Furry Tail Theater's on this Saturday!"
As an adult now: "Dear God, don't let them live action Hello Kitty...I'd be scared of the franchise and my husband will be happy because he won't see another Hello Kitty thing in the house!" If that horrorific Sonic the Hedgehog don't say anything, don't let it be live action...let it be a normal cartoon or at least something Pixar looking. |

Hollywood going on a Dark Knight-fueled edgelord streak has nothing to do with it. Simply put, Hello Kitty was a hot commodity in America at one point, and yet no one in the biz capitalized on that. |

Why does this fill me with an overpowering sense of dread? Why do the words "leaden and lifeless" suddenly pop into my head?
Oh, yeah. "Hollywood" + "anything beloved in America that came from Japan" = "impending doom". Do the math, silly. |

....These people have survived a terrible Berserk adaptation, a dubious live action AOT/Fullmetal Alchemist/DiU adaptation, a Phantom Blood adaptation (that was never released outside of Japan or on home video) and a memetastic My Sister, My Writer anime. This isn't anything new for them. |

Hello Kitty's popularity on this side of the pond has never waned; Her merchandise is still ev-er-y-where! Kids' makeup and picture books are just as ubiquitous as cosmetics and appliances for adults. But that doesn't automatically translate to something that Hollywood can/wants to work with. A TV show? Yeah, that might have happened but a Hollywood film aimed at children that young is a rarity to start with and is usually pulled from domestic properties that are already successful as tv shows; Plus, Sanrio would be majorly protective of its golden goose: It's not something that would easily happen for something like Hello Kitty. Either someone finally convinced Sanrio to sign off on a snark-fest or this is going to be a lot cuter than Hollywood expects its films to be. That's not a situation that usually has both sides working like a hand in a glove; It's easy to buy that this took decades just to get its existence off the ground. That doesn't make the situation any less dumb but Hollywood tends to have a lot of dumb ideas about things so it's understandable. |
