It's been far too long since the anime adaption aired and people who haven't kept up with novels won't remember, so we most likely get a reboot if they wanted to make another TV series.

the novels go further into Taiki's story than the anime did. the two novels not adapted into anime or officially translated include one, The Aspiring Wings, which covers the backstory for the Queen of Kyou, and the other, The Shore at Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak, which furthers the Taiki plot. both have been fantranslated (by a pro translator at that!) for quite a while and many are highly upset at the point the second one ended.
no spoilers, but it's a case of "one problem solved and multiple new problems to deal with" of the most annoying kind. (I almost literally threw the old iPod Touch I read it on into the wall in frustration at the ending.)
I'm not saying that's what they're referring to instead of where the anime left off, but if it is the "Oh my God!!!" is quite called for (trust me, the anime left that plot off at a much better spot).
EDIT:
also, wasn't there already something about a new book about two years ago with mention it was probably already close to being finished?

OH MY GOD I really have to catch up on those novels. I absolutely adore Juuni Kokuki and haven't really given the source material near enough of my attention.

Part of me wants more Twelve Kingdoms, but that same part realizes I'm very behind on the novels.

Hopefully this resuming means renewed enthusiasm for the anime to continue it's adaptation. It's very interesting in anime form but I think it's the kind of thing I'd find reading to be somewhat tedious.

Just came here to say that Juni Kokuki is best isekai ever, Yoko and Shokei had amazing character development, and I wouldn't replace one Aya Hisakawa for 100 voice actors who became popular post 2010.

Now would be a great time for an English company to license and retranslate the novels.

I've read the all of the novels so far so I'm just hoping a certain someone will translate this as well.
