Why is it "13+"? It's gorier than most SJA titles and Shirow manga rated "16+"!

Because Viz is a different company from whoever is doing the Hellsing anime.

The Hellsing anime was also rated 16+, though.

As already mentioned though the people behind the rating for the anime and manga are different. Even if the show was 16+ That doesn't mean much when it comes to the manga's rating. It's just their opinions on what it should be and they obviously vary.

I agree that comparisons to other ratings don't mean much but it does seem like it deserves a 16+. Its really pretty gorey.

Anymore it seems censors are looking less and less away from gore and violence and cracking down harder on sexual situations and nudity. I mean this is just my personal opinion but I think there's a common trend of titles (in any medium really) getting away with more if they're strictly showing violence as opposed to sexual situations or violence with sexual situations. I've seen many more M or 16+ rated manga that solely had sexual situations or nudity as opposed to mangas with solely violence and gore.

I agree with this. Have you guys watched TV lately? It's like how it's now Ok to swear like a sailor on TV and movies. I think the F word no longer makes a movie an automatic R. SuperBad totally would have been urated if it were released a decade ago.

While I do agree with psycho and NaJ, I still believe that Hellsing is incorrectly rated. Personally, I don't get the 13+ age rating when Hellsing is certainly much more violent than a 16+ SJA title like Claymore. Hellsing certainly doesn't contain "mild violence," as the cover mistakenly states.

@NaJ: I've noticed that a PG-13 films are seemingly "allowed" only one F-word and filmmakers seem to be taking advantage of that more and more these days. I've never seen a PG-13 with more than one utterance of said obscenity. That said, hypothetically two or more occurrences would warrant an automatic R. Sad, but that is the way things seem to be these days.

Claymore also occassionally contains nude chixxors. Albeit without significant b00bage, so by anime standards they might as well be men...

Seriously, though... the thing is that gore is becoming more and more prevalent in modern culture. I read somewhere that the producers of the Saw movies mentioned that the MPAA is becoming a lot easier on graphic violence. The main factors are crime shows like CSI which don't hold back on the autopsies, and the much harsher real-life images coming out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Right now, we seem to be in kind of cultural transitional stage- our opinions are evolving, and we're not sure what we really think of it. Eventually, things will stabilize either one way or another. But for a while we're going to see discontinuities like this.

Remember also that these series are not rated by any kind of independant body. The ratings come from the publisher. I suspect they have more to do with marketing then anything else.

Viz isn't releasing the manga. It's Dark Horse Manga. Rolling Eyes

It surprised me too, especially whenspoiler[Alucard rips off a guy's head in half and he drinks blood out of the top half.] It makes you wonder, why does Hellsing have the same rating as Naruto? Wink

Well there's really no regulation on manga rating, so they can put whatever they want. Plus, Dark Horse doesn't even like rating their manga, the most I see on them is a "parental advisory" sticker. If they were to rate Hellsing, it would definitely be M.

They must have gotten a lot of complaints to change the rating. I bought mine(vol.1) a couple of weeks ago and it says 13+, must have been a recent change.

The ones I've seen that are rated mature are shrink-wrapped, like GITS. Though, IDK if GITS is published by the same company.

I see...perhaps it is a website only thing? Or maybe later volumes have a 16+ rating.

I'm pretty sure it's only on their website, because I noticed it too. I looked at the same book awhile ago and I thought it said +14. I also think my copy of one of the volumes has some sort of rating on the back.

The same is with Blade of the Immortal. None of the volumes I've seen are shrink-wrapped or have ratings on them. This is just from what I've seen though.
