It sounds a lot like how western (CA/US) animation is done, especially for games.

I find it weird that the people in the anime industry who seem most interested in CG, are the older directors. There is these 2, Mamoru Oshii, Ichiro Itano and Katsuhiro Otomo.

It's not necessarily that fans are against CGI.
A high quality CGI movie is excellent!
Most of the time, particularly for TV series, the CGI for anime is lower budget and it shows.
Japan isn't incapable. The Video Game divisions are putting out amazing stuff. Especially Square Enix Visual Works.
The other really good one recently was Gantz.
Even American TV CG animation is less liked than the 2D shows. Many of the fan-favourite ones are still largely 2D.
I honestly can't think of a total CG anime show that I liked - quality wise anyway.
So unless the CG is high budget balls to the wall in quality, it usually works better alongside traditional 2D in many productions.
I think studios should aim to do what Square Enix usually does and aim for high budget direct-to-DVD films, like Advent Children and Kingsglaive.
There are also some quality indie Japanese animators that put out pixar-level stuff.

if the claims that CG is used to cut costs, then having high budget CG would be pointless. If a show for example decides to use an external company to make CG Mechs for them to use, instead of hiring more animators or ones that specialise in that field, Masami Obari for example, to do it. The benefits would disappearer if they started putting a lot of money in it, and they would be better off just drawing them.
