Poor CPM-chan... The Libre thing is actually not the first time they've had trouble dealing with Japanese licensors. It took them forever to put out the second YYH movie, the Black Jack OVAS, and the second and third seasons of Utena on dvd, because of those companies. I hope they don't go the way of Macek.

I wonder if we'll see any releases for titles of theres that haven't gotten DVD releases yet like Dancougar or Wannabes? Though I imagine that they might not have dvd rights to those..... still, the promise of better availability of their titles gives me hope we'll see the return of some OOP titles, and the continued availability of current dvd's.

I'm surprised that no one except Fansview.com saw the underlying message here. I seriously think that this was supposed to be a bit of a slap in the face of those that download fansubs. Out of the 100 people or so that participated in this mad grab, how many do you think half of thier collection is actual legal dvds, if even that. I admit I was not there. I was not a first hand witness to this, but from what I read, this is what it seems to me. Even if the message was missed by those that were invovled, I salute you John O'Donnell. Despite past fealings I may have had towards you, I have to give you a bit of respect for the message you attempted to send to the anime masses.

I'm guessing that he gave them away, because he couldn't get rid of them after the bail-out, not because he was flipping off fansubbers.
Plus a lot of those licenses are probably expiring or expired by now. |

John O'Donnell is making a point, a very clever but very interesting point. The people with bags are supposed represent people who download everything for free, so essentially, they were legally stealing.

I really don't think O'Donnell was trying to point fingers. In fact, if anything, I'd imagine he'd be glad that fans checked out the stuff they might have missed when CPM was still in business, because they might be more willing to buy whatever he licenses down the road. He probably can't make much money on the dvds if he wanted to, anyway, because they're in limited quantity, but paradoxically priced really cheap. The guy was the last person who deserved to get screwed by Suncoast, but the fact that he's taking it in stride is admirable. I hope he wins his back his yaoi, so he can rebuild his empire again.

Gatsu's right. I had a 5 min chat with Mr. O'Donnell at his booth Sunday morning and that's exactly what he wanted by selling his DVD's for 5 bucks a pop and, I think, 2 bucks a pop for manga. Well, by 4:30pm the CPM booth was in pandemonium. I managed to get 10 DVDs out of it with 2 or 3 discs I'll actually watch. But after 2 minutes in the riot, I thought it wasn't worth all the pushing and shoving and the otafunk that started to permeate. So I stepped out, and in the excitement congratulated Mr. O'Donnell on the clever publicity stunt and he replied, "See? It's working!" In hindsight however, if it weren't for the presence of the convention staff and security, the stunt could have gotten alot worse with people getting hurt. CPM should have had better planning and communication with the convention staff. Anyway, I did take pictures and I'll post a few somewhere later tonight. |

Add me to the list of those who don't think CPM was trying to make a statement about illegal downloads. I mean, if they were, what's the point they're making? That people like free stuff? That people who like free stuff are bad? If they were trying to teach a lesson or point fingers at fansubbers, it was a pretty subtle one.
Anyway, it's just as easy to think that they just wanted a nice publicity stunt, or didn't want to ship stuff back, or really, really, really wanted to clear out inventory before the end of 2007, than to think he's trying to make a larger point about fandom. |

Great pictures. It was neat seeing their booth before the rush too. Out of curiosity, were there any Revolutionary Girl Utena DVDs available? It's my main CPM series, and given how hard it is to find, I'm just curious as to whether or not they had any there or if the stock is too far gone. |

Thanks. I wanted to show what the booth looked like before the rush and, of course, pictures of the evil mastermind, John O'Donnell. I'm not sure. In the morning, I wasn't really looking for Utena DVDs. I was looking for A-ko and Ping Pong Club DVDs but they didn't have any on hand. Alot of Patlabor and Animation Runner Kuromi DVDs where available though. Of course, by the time the riot started, there was no time for browsing and you where pretty much stuck with what was handed to you. |
