Encase anyone hasn't heard it, there was a podcast with them on ANN a number of years back.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Jan Scott-Frazier, I read about her a lot being important for working in the anime industry for 20 years and being one of the few prominent foreigners to worked in Japan's anime industry.

I believe Jan was one of the few people to break sub purists/dub haters heart about Japanese voice-acting which I kind of agree with, and I'll quote this ANN article from 2003:

ANN's Ryan Matthews in 2003 wrote:

Ha. No, seriously. Ha.

Once Upon a Time, you could say this and know it to be true, not because you knew anything about the Japanese acting, but because the English dub acting was so absolutely amateurishly awful. These days, it's rare for a dub to not be at least passable, and several studios consistently produce very good dubs. So to continue to make this argument, you have to be able to describe just how good the Japanese acting is.

That's where the argument breaks down. If you don't speak Japanese, you cannot determine with any degree of accuracy whether the acting is any good. And please, spare me the hooie about how you can just tell by how well the actors emote.

Jan Scott Frazier tells a funny story about how she learned one of her favorite anime (Dirty Pair) was horribly acted, once she became fluent in Japanese.

So yeah, I credit Jan for debunking the Japanese voices are godly superior (they're not, given my experience listening to a lot of American stuff being dubbed into Japanese).

RIP Jan Scott Frazier. Crying or Very sad Anime cry

I only encountered her once, at Katsucon I think around 2006, but I have friends who knew her better. She was one of one.

Damn, this was such a preventable tragedy. My condolences and prayers to her family and loved ones who must be grieving right now. She was still relatively young to be taken so soon from them—can't even begin to imagine what they’re going through. Crying or Very sad

RIP. Many, many years ago I used to read Jan's amazing blog that talked in great detail about working in the anime industry. I wish it was still around. I learned so much from it. Well-written insider information about the industry is still difficult to come by these days.

As someone who works for hospitals, I wouldn't say "preventable" per se. There are a lot of things hospitals have to think about when they decide whether someone should be on the list or stay on the list. We don't know why she was taken off but factors include urgency, health and other things she may not have been able to control.

My girlfriend's best friend recently needed a second heart transplant because of something brought about by a genetic condition. She was rejected and died a couple days later.

I've really only known about their work via these articles; what a shame.

Rest in Peace. Sad

Jan was my dear friend, my mentor, my role model, my GM, an inspiration, a superstar blazing brighter than Betelgeuse, and a f--king LEGEND. I love, admire, and respect her, and I could never tell her enough how thankful I was for her.

The world is so much darker without her presence. I met her in 2007 and we've been friends since 2008. I dunno what I'm gonna do without her in my life. Well, I kinda do, since Jan asked me to please go forth and be creative in her memory. I just dunno how to do it now.
