Well...it's almost Christmas time, and before we all know it, we'll be into 2004. 2003 was a great, if not, wonderful year for anime. What do you think was the best anime title of 2003?
My choice, hands down, is Witch Hunter Robin. [EDIT - Decolored, desized -C] |

To avoid this becoming another sodding "Cosmo" thread, how about we have people explain why they think their choice is the best anime of 2003, as well?

Yeah...I forgot about that...yeah we can add that in to. And make sure if you do respond, please answer why you choose that anime for your choice. Anyways, I choose Witch Hunter Robin mostly because the animation is breathtaking, the characters are the best-drawn that I've even seen, and overall, IT KICKS ASS!!! [EDIT - Decolored, desized -C] |

Can it be an anime you saw for the first time this year? Because if that was the case I'd definately pick GTO, I read the virst two volumes of the manga a few years ago and just forgot about the series, but I picked up the boxset and marathoned it. I really like GTO because of all the charachters. I like the charachter designs, and how all of the people on the show slowly start liking Onzikua because of his offbeat style of teaching, and that even though he can be a real pervert at times he always comes through for the kids in his class. The soundtrack is also really good, and the animation isn't too bad either.

Without a doubt, Rahxephon. Or maybe GTO.
I don't care that people have called it overrated. It wasn't (unless we're talking about those who expected it to be the second coming in an anime form ) . It lived up to the hype in every way. The art was OVA quality, the characters likeable and well rounded, the music was top-f'ing notch. But best of all, it's a great example of a show with a well-timed, well executed plot. They knew where they were going and how they were going to get there. There was very little filler and every episode I watched made me desperate to watch the next, it was that good at keeping up the suspense level. Better still, they managed this while explaining tons of stuff in pretty much every episode. Some shows keep their suspense by telling you nothing until the final two shows, if ever. Rahxephon's screenwriters deserve the praise for making a complex enough plot to avoid this. Plus, everyone needs their fill of mecha-porn every now and again. I'd also like to second the nod towards GTO but I don't know if it makes my first place. I think I laughed harder watching that show than I've ever done before. The Japanese voice actors were just SO good at flipping out, insane-style. Especially Onizuka and Uchiyamada. And any show with the song "Cresta of love" in its soundtrack deserves mad props. |

RahXephon = Blah.
But enough about that..... For my buck, it is most likely Azumanga Daioh or Abenobashi shoutengai. I've been in a comedy frame of mind all year, and these two are paydirt. I prefer Azumanga Daioh, but Abenobashi has an insanity element that I also find distractingly funny... |

So...okay, I'm confused now. Is this thread for best anime to be produced and aired in 2003, or is it for best domestic anime DVD releases of 2003? Because GTO was first aired in 1999, but was released on DVD in the States between 2002 & 2003. And Witch Hunter Robin was both aired in Japan AND put out in R1 DVD in 2003. So...I'm completely lost now.

Well, (domestically speaking) I'll go for the one series that seems to have near universal appeal, that was based on a best selling manga (that's also managed to claw its way to top sales), was animated by one of the top ranked studios, received an un-faultable (new word, I think) dub, and birthed the latest anime convention style fad;
Chobits. Yeah, Chobits. My vote goes to Chobits for #1 new domestic release of 2003. |

; I don't really keep track of the domestic US releases, only the Japaese ones pretty much. So I consider WHR one of the best of 2002. But then again I forget when WHR ended in Japan, and Wolf's Rain came out shortly after it so... anyway, it was one of the best, and it's already been spoken about.
This year for me: Wolf's Rain Last Exile Matantei Loki Ragnarok Full Metal Alchemist Princess Tutu Scrapped Princess eheheh, 3 bones titles on there. Guess they're getting to be one of my favorites now. Ok, now for why these were the best to me. Wolf's Rain: Most people hated this one, but I fell in love with it. The story was slow, yes, and it didn't really have a conclusion *still waiting for those eps to come out this spring* but it was a great, and gorgeous ride. The character designs, the music, the way it actually kept me intrested in the story even if it never really got anywhere, all great. Only complaint was how... well, it didn't really end, and those filler recap eps. >.< But this anime in my opinion fits the "best anime of all time" type category. It's a work of art. *keeps wondering when the 2nd manga volume will come out* Last Exile: Like Wolf's Rain, this one moved slow too, but it had stuff going on, great animation, music, characters, ect. A great show to watch. Only complaint: I HATED the last ep. *will continue to try and blot it from her mind* Matantei Loki Ragnarok (the mythical detective loki ragnarok): This show was definatly not for everyone, and I'm kinda a dope for getting hooked on it by the 3rd ep. >.> Anyway, any show that has and ADORABLE little boy who is actually the hot sexy seductive Norse god Loki, is good in my book. Especially with occult mysteries to solve. This one mainly appeals to fangirls, and people who like occult/mystery/mythology stuff. People familiar with Norse mythology will get a major kick out of this. Though nothing about it really stands out, I'm hoping for a season two. The manga is great, and even though the anime was very loosely based of the manga, it could still come around with a great season 2. Full Metal Alchemist: I said it when I saw the first couple eps, and now 12 eps into this series, I will continue to say this - this is one of THE best series this year. Sure it's the usual Shonen genre with a teenage guy trying to be the best sort of thing, but dammit, it's a shocker. First it starts out with making you think "oh yeah, nice usual shonen here" but then smacks you in the face with so many serious things. It also got me crying in some parts, so yeah, this show is great. Animation by Bones, so yeah, that tells you much about the quality there. Princess Tutu: THE MOST OVERLOOKED SHOW THIS YEAR. ... >.> yeah, it's a kid show, and yeah it's about a ballerina, and yeah, it has the kid show pattern, but dammit, it was a VERY good kid show. Cute cute CUTE, makes you appreciate classical music, and is a fun spin on the fairy tale genre. I can't really see guys watching this, but I will most definatly be buying this if it comes out here, and using it as a babysitting tool. If you don't know what it's about: A prince one day defeated a monster raven, but to do so his heart was lost and broken into tons of peices. A duck ahiru sees him one day and wishes she could help him regain his heart, and a... magical story teller... turns her into a human with the power to be princess tutu, and collect the peices of his heart. There are tons of surprising revelations, and well... this show makes you realise how sad it is that the Japanese have childrens shows that have more plot and a great story then most of the stuff on American tv. Scrapped Princess: Another highly overlooked show. It starts out really slow, but when it hits the middle of the series *around ep 12, 15, ect* you go 0.0 wow and realise this show was NOT what it apeared to be in the beginning. Dragoons, programs and more pop up and turn what at first turned out to be an ok fantasy show into an awesome sci-fi/fantasy one. .... there's my list. |

It seems most people like it. I've only heard good things (mostly) and I really want to see it. Hmmm. I don't really keep track of releases, although this would prabably be the first year I really became aware of them. Let's see FLCL and Abenobashi because they are awesome and really funny. I'll stick with FLCL as best for 2003 because most of Abenobashi will come out next year, domestically. |
