Minisode wise this season does feel a bit lacking, though fall tends to do that compared to Spring especially, having 7-8 series on average this year versus 5 in Winter and Fall.
Ame Iro Cocoa Ame Con is apparently season 4, but I don't expect the reviewers to necessarily know that if they just think something doesn't exist for them to review if CR or the like doesn't pick it up, which is nonsense, even if it's less popular for legit reviewers that get paid. But there was one in Hawaii that CR didn't pick up, if any simulcast picked it up. Pingu in the City is not really anime, but it did make me remember watching occasional episodes of the original Pingu back in the day. Omiai Aite Wa Oshiego, Tsuyoki Na Mondaiji is something I'm not surprised the ANN Short Anime reviewers skipped or were just unaware of, because well, it's in the same vein as Skirt no Naka from last season and Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoki no Yoru Ni from Spring 2017, which are basically porn, unfortunately, with an average story at best, only interesting in how unique the premises are, like a college girl being roped into an engagement with a Buddhist monk in training who she had a crush on in high school, not realizing he was into her. Or a cross dresser slowly falls in love with a girl who is also falling in love with him because he helps her get over her androphobia. Onyakopon was only added this week, so I imagine it wasn't on the radar but it's not as bad as some other stuff I've seen. Minisodes tend to be focused on harmless simple fun when they fall into the 3-4 minute length. Love Kome S2 is keeping up the theme of grain idols with noodles, so I'm invested a bit in seeing what happens even if the rice puns are still painful Taishou Chicchai is supposed to be BL related, though I imagine the difficulty in adapting what are usually visual novels is that immersion of the viewer into a position that's just spectator, though One Room M tried the Makura no Danshi approach a few seasons ago with a first person perspective. Just seems like fujoshi bait more than anything in this case, since it's guys fighting each other and such, no females to be seen I think the one I'd recommend the most to a non anime fan to try out would definitely be Love Is Like a Cocktail (one of the few times I really enjoy a localization versus the Japanese), because it's a good way to connect for people who often feel like they need some change in their drinking, sort of like how Wakako Zake did a while back, albeit that was more specifically for Japanese OL, probably, versus this where it's accessible to Americans, I'd imagine. I'd like to see Dia Horizon, but fans haven't gotten more than the raws, so I'm hesitant, since, unlike Pingu in the City, I can't get the general idea just by watching it, since that kind of format where a nonsensical language is used and the actions and setup make the plot rather than dialogue. Overall, half of these that you can really find are sequels and the new stuff is meh to slightly above average in niche appeal, so I'm just hoping Winter 2018 has some good stuff, besides Kaijuu Girls S2, which makes me happy, because they're so cute and destructive at the same time Unless the anime market crashes big time in the next 5-10 years, minisodes will still remain in that obscure angle rather than becoming the norm, which I think would be preferable alongside a more exclusive list of long form stuff, not just whatever a company can squeeze out like a turd |

The best short series (Pingu in the City) is unfortunately not available for legal streaming.

Here is a quick google search for you.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphophyllite Objects that are soft and can be easily scratch on the surface (what Mohs scale is all about) can still be very brittle. Besides, you are talking about minerals, more often than not they have cleavage, which is going to factored into how easily they could be shattered. |

Well, episode 1 of Dies Irae was a whole lot more enjoyable than the aptly designated Episode 0. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever seen an episode 0 of any show that wasn't kind of useless.

Looking at episode 2 of TWOCAR, I think most of us misjudged the kind of show it is. Rather than focusing on the nominal leads with their shared crush, it looks like it's going to walk through the various racing pairs and the nature of their relationships with each other. I don't know that that makes it good, but it's a different focus than the one so many found off-putting.

Well bugger. Hadn't thought of that. Wonder if Crunchyroll will pick it up, although I doubt it. Oh well, at least it probably won't end up in the hands of Amazon this time. |

And so it has come to this. In the year of 2017, the affable penguin of our childhoods is only accessible by illegal means... |

Pingu being by Polygon Pictures makes me think it'll be picked up eventually by Anime Strike or Netflix...even Sanzoku no Musume Ronja eventually was streamed on Amazon, a year or so after it came out.

Not only is the amount of good TV anime nearly unheard of for 1 cour but the amount of almost good shows is high too. Namely: Blood Blockade Battlefront, Gintama, Hoozuki no Reitetsu, Land of the Lustrous and The Ancient Magus' Bride. A very strong finish to an alright year!
3-gatsu no Lion The season´s best was saved for last and newcomers can´t start here. The ending animation is a masterpiece btw. 9/10 Garo: Vanishing Line I still remember the first Garo anime. It started promising enough and then gradually fell off a cliff. Let´s hope for a different outcome here. The show looks and sound nice and the US setting is kinda cool but there comes our first problem. The black couple in ep. 2 and the useless seeming girl sidekick are the most Japanese Americans i have ever seen. Hups? The back and white morality sucks too but sniper Batman is fun. More of him. 7/10 Inuyashiki sure looks nice due to Madhouse 2.0 animating it. This is also a direct adaptation, which leads to a too slow first half thanks to the slow pacing. I though don´t quite care as the story lives of it being unique in at least the anime field. The fun won´t last though, as the manga peaks in act 1. 8/10 for now and a 7/10 overall, unless this goes off scrip. Juuni Taisen I am very glad that a LN adaptation worked out for once first of all. The author´s Katanagatari and S01 of Monogatari were fun enough, so i am not surprised by the anime´s quality. The real surprise are the cinematic production values. How was this financed!?! The animation could be sustained though due to the 12 ep. limit and the fact that the source is just 1 book. The anime is lastly more forthcoming with details about the dead men walking, as Boar´s backstory was greatly expanded. At least when compared to the manga adaptation. 8/10 Kino no Tabi - the Beautiful World - the Animated Series can be treated as a 2nd season for the last the adaptation. Just with brighter colors and more lankly designs. Or not, due to ep.2 already being a swifter "remake". The same problems are also again present. Kino is too bland a character as she borderline acts like a (video game) avatar. She may be a remorseless serial killer, yet this is a show where no one cares about anything and tragedies can´t work like that. Especially as nearly all stories rely on that ONE twist, which makes them all to similar and formulaic to surprise. 7/10 Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau I like the subdued colors scheme for the adaptation and this is more or less what Kino should be characterization and format wise. People don´t shrug off a genocide here. The story will soon become darker and i still ask myself why the manga primarily targets teen girls. 8/10 Osomatsu-san 2 Fame and money are indeed scary but who knew that it can lead to becoming a cannibal. The 2nd ep. was something else too. 8,5/10 Ballroom e Youkoso dances on while the manga can´t quite exit its 1 year hiatus. Also on my plate are: DuckTales, Justice League Action, Star Wars Rebels, Teen Titans Go, The Simpsons (urgh) and Voltron: Legendary Defender. Batman vs. Two-Face lastly featured Adam West´s final performance and William Shatner´s first good one in 3 decades. |

I agree on that last part. If a reviewer is unable to present an objective review of the show without spending a good chunk of it talking about herself and her own personal likes and dislikes, maybe anime reviewing isn't for her. This is far from an isolated incident, either. Readers are here to read about the show, not Rebecca's teetotaling. |

Reviews, by definition, are opinions, not objective descriptions. Rebecca is a brilliant reviewer with an academic background who adds a lot of depth to her reviews. Not getting the appeal of a show or two (while still exploring what that appeal may be) is certainly allowed, especially with the quick-take nature of a preview guide. Most of the reviewers are matched up long term with shows they have an affinity to, so being unable to see the appeal of a show is not usually a problem in daily streaming reviews.

^ I feel like all ANN reviews should have a disclaimer at the top of the page stating that reviews are not "objective" machine output made by robots, and all reviews will include the reviewers subjective opinions about things that are important to the analysis of the content. Maybe then we wouldnt get a dozen or so comments complaining about that every time.

just be glad they didn't make this garo like those old ova's of the 80's. sword's "praying to any big boobs" reminds me way too much of mad bull 34 which this could have easily could have went to! [b]Surprisingly, the weakest link in this first episode might be Sword himself, played by Taliesin Jaffe (going by T. Axelrod for this dub). [b/] though i wonder why he's using an alias for the dub though? while it does have explicit violence, its not in the level as say hellsing ultimate or black lagoon and it dont have at this point very explicit content ala sin nanatsu no taizai let alone Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne so i wouldnt see the point in using one. regardless, he's pretty decent as sword. i for one am all for it. usually bad ass male characters like sword tends to be voiced by Chris Sabat like in soltry rei, but its a surprise their using someone different. i guess their taking the fans' feedback on using the same VA for a specific role all the time to heart it seems. |
