I questioned the space mission as well at first, but the visual of Korosensei's students going faster than him and where he can't, leaving him behind, cemented its place in the story for me.

I remember the space portion at the time in the manga, a lot of people were feeling like the series was about to jump the shark, thankfully we got a satisfying ending anyway but boy that little miniarc is so dumb.
Logically it makes basically zero sense, it's mostly uneeded and is down right stupid. The way the astronauts react also makes little sense and for a series that was relativity grounded in it's won reality up to that point it just feels so tacked on and doesn't flow with the rest of the series.
Everything up to that point made sense for assassin related people to do, but the whole lead up to getting into space, the way the people in space react so casually and relaxed towards high schoolers being there is totally illogical, and the arc could have gotten the same point across by simply having them break into a research facility, the space portion just felt tacked on so they could say "We went to space"

Whether or not it happens, I'm sincerely hoping Funimation licenses the live-action movies, because they are more-than-decent, faithful adaptations of this series. The worst one can say is that they are abridged versions of Seasons 1 and 2, and yet they still stand well enough on their own.

That is pretty much my assessment. The Class E kids doing very well on their tests showed how much progress they made, but this was stretching it. I suppose my opinion on that arc might have softened if the whole, "kill vs. save" debate wasn't rendered moot by the government forcing them to make good on the beginning premise of the show.

Although not by Funimation nor in America, they were released by Madman Entertainment in Australia/NZ

I know, I have that. I'm talking about an American domestic release for those that don't have region-free players like I do, and if it's Funimation they'd likely produce a dub with the same cast as the anime.
