Even if you normally listen to the MP3, I recommend watching ANNCast's first ever intermission in the video version (33:45 timestamp start). It's...an experience. Laughing

I think Zac's in the minority on MST3K. Almost everyone I've talked to loves it, even if they agree the jokes are a little too fast.

You just have to accept that Breaking Bad references today are like Knight Rider references in 1991.

Without any hyperbole, that was the best intermission I've ever seen! Turtles, Muppet songs and more besides!

News that tape-trading ever existed was something I only learned after my bout of relying on Youtube three-part uploads to sate my anime needs. Uploaders sometimes reversed the order of the letters in an anime's name to postpone deletion. Does anyone remember that?

Hearing about the old tape trading days is certainly enlightening for me since that was never I experienced and it simply makes more grateful for what fans now. MST3K was never something I ever got into so I don't have an opinion one way or the other on he latest incarnation of it.

Glad to here the Utena reviews are enjoyable I was gonna participate in it but given that I am not the biggest fan of Ikuhara as a director. Along with certain world view differences I decided to just recuse myself from that discussion. As far as Spring 2017 "surprises" Warau Salesman New has remained amazingly fresh.

While Sakurada Reset continues to be bad but watchable if only for Kana Hanazawa epically "phoning it in" each episode. World Break still has potential so I'm hopeful and Atack on Titan I was never fan of so I'm glad people like it but I'll pass.

OMG, I came up in the VHS fansub trading era, too and was the supplier for some of my AOL friends during my university anime club days. I have fond memories of those awful old Hecto Rurouni Kenshin subs (somehow the phrase "snobbish neck" got into one of the EDs??).

I'm also a huge MiSTie, was a backer on the new season, so delighted they got a new season and hoping they get more... But yeah, Zac's not alone; I have my reservations, too. Jonah and the bots haven't clicked as distinctive personae for me yet, so it doesn't feel like the jokes are coming from three distinct voices/viewpoints as clearly as in the old days. Also some of the host segments feel oddly stingy, especially early in the new season, like Pearl's first visit or the 200th episode bit; I know the Forresters always have this put-down schtick but it was like watching the show go "I don't really want to do this" and I was like "come on, I want you to do it!!" And some of the host segments didn't really give a satisfying arc or closure; the Hercules movie basically had a no-closure thing for the end of the whole episode, which was kind of enh. Could have done with more variety in the movies, too, like at least one earnest, stagey old B&W something.

But to bring the tangent back around, if I'd taken the chance to ask a question in the chat, it would have been: If one anime were to be featured on MST3K, what should it be?

The side-chat about how you two got started in anime is absolutely heart-warming. Smile A good reminder that even the pros have to start somewhere. (For an extra reminder and maybe a fun trip down the rabbit hole: https://groups.google.com/forum/message/raw?msg=alt.fan.lion-king/sjtOieKCpjM/RvaMeYu-M5UJ ) Amazing what you can do with something if you have 22 years to spend on it. Anime smile

Oh, dear, Jacob.... you do not know anything about what's going to happen in SukaSuka. You got a few things right.... but everyhing else.... nope. SukaSuka is nothing like standard LNs. Sorry, but you are wrong. Very, very wrong.

Hand Shakers. Enough Said.

I was thinking that intermission needed something at the beginning and damned if you didn't put in just the right things.

Still trying to downplay Re:Zero, eh Jacob? I'll grant it didn't have much competition while it aired, especially in the summer, but then again it got second in the last megapoll, and there was certainly competition there, some which were fresher in the viewers' minds. I don't think SukaSuka (or WorldEnd if you prefer CR's abbreviation) will be as big as Re:Zero but we'll see where it goes, whether it turns out like you think it will or not-which it very well may.

I'm certainly lucky I didn't come into the community in the VHS fansub days (I was still a kid then anyhow). While at the time, legit streaming wasn't too big, for simulcasts at least (CR was in its infancy as a legit business), most things could be found fairly easily so any difficulty paled in comparison to those of our forbears, to say nothing of Toonami and other blocks of anime airing on TV.

The Promised Neverland is kinda strange... Just about every chapter is between an 8/10 and a 10/10 (only the best chapters tho) but almost no one's talking about it. Even tho it's from WSJ... Neutral

Looks like they edited out the intermission? Sad

But thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! for fixing the audio issues! Whatever you did, keep doing it!! I can't tell you what a joy it was to listen to this without having to futz around to be able to hear Jacob. Really, seriously, thank you.

I'm sorry to hear that MST3K is stumbling in its return. Sometimes you just can't recapture the lightning I guess.

I very much enjoyed the chat about "the old days." I did the same thing re: broadcast edits when Monster ran on Sci-Fi, so I understand that kind of obsession. Very Happy

I'm still geeking out that Zac answered my question in chat Very Happy I myself am a Mike man...woman...whatever, but I can appreciate Zac's answer. Joel and I are actually alumni of the same university. Minnesota nice for the win!

That's disappointing to hear that the MST3K reboot is rough around the edges. Did it all get released at once, or is is coming out weekly? Maybe after a few episodes they'll get into the groove of things.

One of my favorite episodes in a while(not that the others aren't exceptional as well, of course!). But seriously, that was a really good story-time kind of episode. Learning a little more about both of your pasts is always fun. Jacob's story, in particular, was enlightening, since I hadn't really heard much about that before. I grew up in a similar type of family, but didn't even have any kind of television, so the only cartoon access I ever had was during very occasional sleep overs. Anyway, great content.
Also, man, Jacob, I love how you talk about anime. It's just always so entertaining, even when I don't agree with you. But anyway, when you talk about AoT, especially, it's like my faith in anime criticism is restored. As a big fan of the show who has struggled to understand most of the complaints toward the series, it's great to have someone like you express your love for the series as more than some stupid action show. Because I think it's much more clever and thoughtful than a lot of people give it credit for. And have written extensively about it myself. Of course it's bombastic and over-the-top, and viscerally appealing as well, but it's got a lot of intrigue and solid character development in there. Yet it seems like the broader "critic" community has something against it, which, honestly, from my pov, just comes down to it not being their kind of show. And some of them seem somehow worried that they will be looked down on if they like this hugely popular "casual" show. Anyway, a huge thanks for that, and an overall great episode gentlemen. Smile

The new season of Attack on Titan is really great, I'm enjoying it more than the manga and the changes they've done for the tone are working wonders, but I would say they did wait too long and though they may not have outright killed the franchise, the sales predictions for the DVD/BD are abysmal so who knows what the future may bring in terms of sequels :/

For those that didn't see the live stream, Jake had to go poop. I think it was 5-10 minutes. We saw 2 Ninja Turtles action figures: one was popping his eyes out and the other was spinning his head. Some kind of funky music was also playing.
