I've been trying for ages to find a copy of this somewhere....As a fan of Masamune Shirow's work (especially Appleseed) I really want to see it. Maybe I can find a copy on VHS somewhere.
BTW, small goof: It's Motoko Kusanagi, not Makoto. |

Haha, I totally remember watching this on Encore Action when I was in high school. I wasn't blown away by it, but it is a solid action romp. And there's nothing wrong with that. I was re-watching Bubblegum Crisis a few nights ago and thinking about how much I missed the fun cyberpunk series of the 80s (and Black Magic M-66 crossed my mind, of course). If someone made an OVA in this day and age about crazy killer robots, with Kenichi Sonoda-esque character designs and an all-synth soundtrack, it would either be the most awesome or most ridiculous thing ever.

I'm not a big Shirow fan, but I admit I got a kick out of this one when I saw it on vhs. I'm hoping DH at least gives me the manga in the near future, so I can see what was left out of the anime. [Probably the usual techno-babble, but what the hell?]

About a year ago, I went on a crusade to track down everything and anything Shirow had created that made its way stateside. I must've gotten lucky because I picked up a new/sealed copy of the Black Magic DVD for less than $5.
Anyway, I had pretty much the same reaction. The storyline is pretty basic and a little hard to believe at times, but the action sequences and characters really make this film. There's hardly a dull moment (and trust me, some Shirow projects will put you to sleep like the original Appleseed or Gundress). It's certainly a title worthy of this column. |

It's weird, but even back during my early anime days, I just couldn't get into this one totally. Thought it was cute at times but... dunno, just never grabbed me.
I think I have the DVD around here though.... hmm... |

I will not be satisfied until Bandai Visual's designs on our shores go the way of Black Magic M-66's original U.S. licensor...and just to spite them, I may very well see if I can't dig up the DVD on eBay. >8D |

As an inveterate Shirow Masamune supporter/collector I have both the Manga & DVD (US) versions of this ..... it's not one of his great works but in my book definitely rates as a minor classic (provenance, history & it's a lot of fun).
Excellent site with more info: http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/towers/1073/black.htm Both the DVD & (don't suggest illegal methods ~Zalis) can be found on the internet. There was also a Japanese Laser Disk. Watch out for Ebay bootlegs. Offtopic- still wish for a BT on 'Ushiro no Shomen Daare' especially after the news on a 'Nagasaki 1945 ~ The Angelus Bells' showing in the US (by the same Seiji ARIHARA). Sad about the forum posts on Nagasaki though. Thanks again for an excellent BT. Nico M |

Black Magic M-66 got released on dvd in Japan. I'm hoping Bandai Visual will release this gem on DVD in the US.
I love this anime, it's A grade material. There are not many realistic military style OVA's so I fell in love with this when I first saw it. The mechanical designs in this are awesome and the soundtrack really adds to the tension. I recommend this as a must see to 80's fans, the cast is entirely composed of adults, no silly little kids trying to save the word. I'm also a huge fan of the Appleseed OVA as well. Another show BV will have access to when Manga' Entertainment's license expires for it. |

Y'know, this show has been a bit of an oddity for me for some time... I know I've seen it. I remember the guy I borrowed the VHS from. I have the ending theme on cassette, recorded from that video- but for the life of me, I don't remember a bloody thing about it! Story, characters, everything but how M-66 looks is completely gone from my head.
I guess that just means I gotta watch it again sometime, huh? |
