I try to keep an open mind but the more I see of this dub, the more awful I think it is. This Van just sounds rather bland and frankly rather robotic and has zero chemistry with Hitomi. Hitomi's VA also sounds like she's just kind of bored with the script. She doesn't have any of the energy the original dub VA had. And someone tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the additional footage actually ruins the scene? It just kind of drags down the pacing and doesn't really add anything that advances the plot or characters in any way. There's probably a reason they felt like this scene wasn't in needed on TV....

Well I feel the opposite. To me it seems like this new dub will match the Japanese much more by having the voices more natural in tone rather than the extreme overacting like the Ocean dub. My issue with the Ocean dub is they dubbed it like a western cartoon where everything feels forced & silly and it doesn't fit Escaflowne. The FUNimation dub seems like it will actually have range and not overact like Ocean's dub.

Neither English dub is particularly good. They both pale in comparison to the Japanese version. I'd say this new one is marginally better, but marginally isn't good enough for that crowdfunding they did. Even so, I'll probably end up getting the Blu-Rays because it's Escaflowne on Blu-Ray.

Even ignoring the original dub, there's simply no comparison between Maaya Sakamoto and Caitlin Glass who just sounds too much like Winry to me in this clip. To be honest, I liked that the old dub of Escaflowne had more of a Western feel to it and didn't try to copy the Japanese because honestly Escaflowne is more like a Western fantasy action series than it is like a lot of other anime. I would have been more forgiving of this dub if Funimation treated it like they did all their other dubs. But they hyped it up that it was going to be so much better than the original dub and was going to blow you away to the point they pretty much conned the fans into paying them to do their job. The end result is still we just got kind of an "eh" dub from them. It's not a bad dub but it's certainly not worth all the hype and attention they gave it with their shady Kickstarter that they're still not telling us how much the fans actually contributed to.

She wasn't even very good as Winry. Actually, I think even her Hitomi is better than her Winry. Her Miria is better than both.
I like Dismuke's Van, though. It's not the same as Morrow's, but I feel it works.

Wow, I can't say agree with either of the responses here. Having heard the Funimation dub in its entirety, I gotta say that it's actually really, really good. There IS chemistry between the actors and the emotional range is much stronger than that of the Ocean dub. There's a lot more passion to the actors' performances than there ever were in the Ocean dub. I did not find anything particularly grating about it. Now I had nothing against the Ocean dub other than bizarre translation issues, but as far as I'm concerned, Funimation has knocked this out of the park. I don't care how it compares to the Japanese version; to my ears it's a great to excellent dub.
