It's exceedingly rare to see this sort of monster breakout for something like this especially in 2016's Japanese media landscape so this has been about the most interesting story to follow in anime in a few years for me at least.

I'm glad both RADWIMPs and Makoto Shinkai are getting the recognition and exposure they deserve. Shinkai's been under people's radar and not many people know his works, but now the fruits of his labor are out and it's safe to say this film's a hit. This film is definitely going to help boost their careers and their talents are finally getting recognized by a larger audience.
For something like this to sort of come out of nowhere (not knowing what Shinkai really has in store for us) is amazing. This film rivaling Shin Godzilla and RADWIMPs getting #1 on the charts is just incredible. I'm rooting for ya, Shinkai!

Let's not be so naive here. Before this movie premiered in theaters in Japan I saw advertisements for it EVERYWHERE. Entire Yamanote trains were taken over for it (same as for Final Fantasy 15 currently). There were massive billboards at major city centers in Tokyo, and I saw advertisements on the big jumbotrons in Shibuya and Shinjuku... Toho went all out on the advertisement and promotion for this. Now, that being said, the reason it got such huge promotion was very likely because Toho knew they had a big hit on their hands and pushed it hard, and its actual word of mouth and reviews have been excellent. But it's completely unfair to compare this to the promotion that any of Shinkai's previous films received previously, so I'm not sure calling it a "monster breakout" is accurate. To my mind, it looks like this is all according to plan for them. It's not like some small indie film that got legs. This was full-on nation-wide release by major studio from the get-go. |

It doesn't need to be indie for it to be a breakout. A majority of things push heavy adverting and still don't end up doing this well. ------ This is totally deserved. I haven't seen the movie yet but the soundtrack is a fantastic album. RADWIMPS is a great band. I could only find one (legal/official) upload of a track from the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDSkFeMVNFs (Track 8). The album as a whole doesn't have the whole sadness theme going on that TENMON would've brought, so I have hopes the movie also isn't so sad like Shinkai's previous works have mostly been. |

I'm just saying you should compare apples to apples: Take Hosoda's latest film, Boy and the Beast. It earned box office of 5.85 billion overall, while Toho is predicting 6 billion for this film. They both got about the same advertising push, and no one was calling Boy and the Beast a "breakout"... This is Makoto Shinkai's first film that got such major backing, and it's performing as one would expect (maybe a little better) for this kind of major backed animated film in Japan. The sound track however is definitely doing gangbusters compared to usual movie soundtracks. |
