As a history buff, I find this to be really interesting. It's fun to imagine how he looked, but I'm always in favor of revealing the truth.

Saito was one of the lucky ones from the Shinsengumi, the rest got killed during battles in the Meiji Restoration or were executed.

Saitou as portrayed in Kaze Hikaru! :) (my fictional-Shinsengumi-narrative of choice.) This one most closely resembles the real guy, maybe just by virtue of having a period-appropriate hair style...

I thought all those pictures of Saito Hajime were lost forever or something.

What's creepy is that all the representations of him are close to the original to varying degrees.

Real badass legend. Saitou Hajime without a doubt, is one of Japan's most important heroes.

Inaccurate. Okita died because of tuberculosis. Yamanami committed seppuku. Shinpachi died from natural causes. Nishiki committed seppuku.

"Hero" is definitely a distorted word to describe a member of a death squad. I realize modern fiction glorifies and distorts it, but the Shinsengumi was still a death squad.

This is rekindling my desire to learn more about Japanese historical figures.

This has made my year, at least. I never expected we would get any Saito pictures at this point, and was used to find the fake ones everywhere, which was annoying. I didn't even know there were any real pictures left (I don't think the fact these existed was public). But it is so satisfying to finally be able to see his real face. This is amazing.

Interesting that each of the fictional versions in the article have bluish-purplish hair. Weird pattern.

That's nice that the family decided to release his photos.
