Sigh. How long before that company puts the Robotech franchise out of it's misery? This comic is not going to sell well.

so why hasn't anyone tried to force harmony gold out of business since trying to buy the license away from them would require an amount well into the trillions

By popular decree, and in view of the many critical pieces that have been penned on such a topic as this, boo! |

HG just pretty much refuses to die. If you look at their history and everything they've gone through, it's honestly pretty impressive that whatever's left of them is still standing around. Outside of nostalgia for some though, I really can't see a single person being interested in a Robotech comic. |

Harmony Gold these days is a real estate company. They just hold the license to have a secondary revenue stream. Sometimes I feel like it's to be dicks. (You want Macross Delta? WELL SCREW YOU YOU CAN'T HAVE IT! Read these comics rehashing the original instead).

The only justification is that Sony is trying to set up some sort of modern interest for the supposed live action movie project, yet comics just don't have a broad enough appeal in the west. |

I find it strange that people have complained about anime being tampered with but finally ADV puts out a proper dub of the original Macross, uncut, and Lynn Minmay's Seiyu voicing her again in English and for some reason that wasn't a hit at all.
Personally, I wish they'd have done the same for Voltron and Saber Rider because I prefer the ADV dub of Macross over Robotech. |

How quickly folks forget that they managed to raise $1.4 million on Kickstarter three years ago... There are a lot of people who got into Robotech when it was on tv in the US and never made the jump to any other anime series, the same way there are a lot of people who remember Power Rangers fondly but couldn't care less about super sentai. These people don't care that these shows were nothing like the originals; they are only interested in the Americanized versions. There are even people who like the Americanized versions because they are Americanized. |

I'm amazed that Robotech is still going on after all these years despite it earning its notorious reputation of being the reason for most of the Macross franchise not being able to see the light of day in the U.S. Harmony Gold must really be desperate in attempting to bring relevancy back to their long-outdated show...

Let's not forget that the Kickstarter failed to reach its goal.

I have a question. How come there's so much hate directed towards Robotech but Voltron gets a free pass? Both of them are nostalgia mining from companies who can't do anything original, but people seem more critical of Robotech than Voltron despite the fact Voltron pumps out more American entries and therefore milks the brand far more than Robotech? Both are franchises that should be forgotten.

Its goal was $70,000, it made $1,442,312. Are we talking about different Kickstarters?
Among us anime fans. This comicbook series isn't marketed to us, it's marketed to people making their weekly trips to their local comic shop to buy Spider-Gwen and Green Lantern comics. I think that if you walked into an average U.S. comic shop, you're much more likely to find people who fondly remember Robotech as a cartoon they watched when they were kids and haven't thought about in decades, but are willing to drop 4 bucks on nostalgia. If we want to actually force Harmony Gold to let Macross come to the US, the first step shouldn't be to dismiss the possibility that they are still making money off Robotech. |

Voltron at least tries new stuff, with varying results each time. They've tried 3D with Third Dimension, they tried a reboot with Force before actually getting it right with the Dreamworks show. That's not even mentioning Fleet of Doom either, which might as well be a crossover that never actually happened. At this point, I'd say Voltron has more love overseas than it ever did in its original country, with GoLion being just another case of "Me too!" during the 80s Robot Boom. Unlike the Robotech/Macross situation, I'd argue it's actually reversed because GoLion and Dairugger XV were just one offs and haven't really received new material while Macross is constantly getting new stuff, half of which doesn't come overseas. Just my two cents. |

That's a kickstarter by Palladium books for a table top game. This is the kickstarter by Harmony Gold which was canceled (because it was going to fail) |
