He definitely deserves a place on the list; he has quite an eye for detail. I do wish his writing was as good,since his most of his films are so damn similar in narrative and themes.

I feel exactly the same about Shinkai's work. Now, if only he teamed up with another writer then maybe we can get a Shinkai film that isn't the same old romance drama. |

Even after reading through the Variety article I have no idea who any of these other people are. The only references I saw was one guy made a commercial and one guy directs Sanjay and Craig. Most seem to leave out which shows they made which you think would be helpful in trying to watch them.

The title of the article makes it sound like they're treating him as some new upstart. I guess in depends on the meaning of "watch". Watch as in to just watch their movies, yeah, that works. But watch as in to look out for makes it sound like he's a greenhorn.

Man I still remember when the "Voices of a Distant Star" fansub was released. Amazing how far this guy has come. As much as I like his drama stuff, I really wish he would do another Sci Fi movie.

"The Place Promised in Our Early Days" (what a title), was a really good mix of sci-fi and drama. It's probably my favorite Shinkai movie i've seen so far. |

I wonder if they'll nominate Hiroyuki Imaishi sometime. That guy knows how to work with limited animation like nobody else and is my favorite animation guy in Japan.
And yeah, despite how I grew up keeping a close eye on animation and animators, I always had trouble figuring out who did what. Not sure if this is the case, but of the ones I was eventually able to piece together, a lot of these names with animation awards either do secondary work in mainsteam or otherwise famous productions and go largely unrecognized, or they primarily do arthouse or underground stuff. |

This is as strong an accolade as any anime director could hope for in the absence of influential friends in Hollywood.
Divisive though they may be, Shinkai's first three films were so honest and gently intimate that one cannot help but see their worlds through the love-tainted eyes with which he crafted them. When it comes to producing delicate tearjerkers though, Mamoru Hosoda has proven to be hot on Shinkai's tale with Wolf Children. It will be interesting to see if similar mainstream praise comes his way in due time. |

Despite what everyone says about his bittersweet romance-drama formula, I still like it. Hope his new movie will be a huge hit.

But he tried doing something different when directing Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which was resoundingly awful! (Kaze renamed it to Journey to Agartha over here, which made the viewing experience even worse by reminding me of Agatha Christie. It brought to mind what Miss Marple would be like a character in a fantasy anime.) |
