I picked up a manga on a whim yesterday. It's a world manga called gothic sports.

It was really cool. Quick paced and some nice characters. Its about a girl who tranferred to a new school and didn't make the basketball team and the soccer team treats gals like crap. So with some luck and convincing she forms a soccer team. The catch is its a gothic lolita soccer team.

Its the characters themselves which take a cliche of gals in sports and make it a bit more fun. Its not as drawn out as my other fave sports title crimson hero but I think its better that way. It gets to the point quickly. The art is cool and look a bit like the art from Doubt. I know its from a european artist...I think germany but I might be wrong.

Anyone else check this out yet/ If you haven't give yourself a preview.

I know this manga, coz I'm Gerrman, and it is really from German. Here in Germany Vol. 3 of it will be released this month.
I find the story very funny, but the drawings could be better. I think Anike Hage doesn't really match with the Japanese mangakas. But she is very young and hasn't such experience than the Japanese ones.

I don't know...and I think she also doesn't know how much Volumes she will made. But Vol. 3 isn't the end.
To the mangaka herself. Anika Hage was born in 1985. In 2004 she made the second place in a German manga competition. In 2005 her first story (a short story) was realeased in a manga anthology. So "Gothic Sports" ist her first real professional manga.

And why you're there my German friend can I ask you a question? Do your German-made manga read left-to-right or in right-to-left? I ask that because most of the world manga I have read were left-to-right, with the exception of some French one and amongst those there were the translation of some German titles and they rode right-to-left. Tokyopop's OEL reads left-to-right and Gothic Sports is published by Tokyopop so I guess it has the same format. So what's the deal here? Are those French publisher flipping the German manga?

The German mangakas wrote their works in the japanese way. And that means from back-to-foreward and from right-to-left. All German mangas are published in this way.

Yep, most (current) German original mangas are RTL (japanese way), at least those done by Carlsen and Tokyopop are. On the other hand most (current) French original mangas are LTR (western way), like for example "Pink Diary" and all the stuff running in Shogun magazine. AFAIK there's been no flipping of imported titles (that'd be just weird).

Nope. Most of the initial artists in Shogun just weren't my style (art looked mostly half-formed and generic). Also I had the impression that 90% of the stories were generic SF. I only bought one of the collections, "Kairi" vol.1, which looked better, but haven't read it yet.

Visiting their site now I notice a greater diversity of styles and subject matter. I'll have to check it out again when I'm in Belgium the next time.

On the other hand, "Pink Diary" started good and is becoming really interesting (if you take it for what it is: a drama, a look at teenagers on the brink of a nervous breakdown).

I finished V.1 today, and I must say I rather enjoyied it. Not bad for someone so young, what is she like 18? To be honest when I picked it up I was expecting it to be mega-lame. But I don't know, it kinda avoided many of the cliches I was expecting, and seemed to move along quite well. The story assumes that you already take a lot of things for granted, and doesn't even attempt to explain them, which for me anyway was somewhat refreshing. With that said it moves really fast, and somewhat too fast at times. There is a character introduced like every 20 pages and you really don't have any idea how you should take them. I hope that they will be fleshed out more in later volumes.

Another saving grace though is the art, whether a simple drawing or a detailed one, she always seems to mantain a level of cuteness, so I definitely liked that. One thing she could work on in this area I would say is some more detailed backgrounds.
