After reading this thread my main question is how does the use of a Spiderman font equate one to being a Republican? While Vic may have bad website design issue (I don't think I've been over there), so do a number of the VA's. Check out Greg Ayres or Travis Willingham's MySpace - unless one or both updated there sites recently they are both browser crashers (I haven't been over to either site lately because of that) .
As to why people are sending Zac question on Vic, my guess is they're doing it to tick Zac off . I don't know if Zac really doesn't like Vic but I've alway had the impression he doesn't like him and my guess is others have the same impression and are either a) trying to pull Zac's chain with the questions or b) trying to change Zac's mind on the subject . It's August, it's hot, and watching Zac melt down is a cheaper date than a disaster movie, it you get my drift, Zac . [The above is meant in fun Zac (plus I do think they're trying to pull your chain), so please don't get angry ] As to Crispin Freeman having fangirls - of course he does! Currently a number of them are hanging out over at ASMB going gaga over Blood+, if anyone is wanting to find them . |

People are not that clever and I've never said anything one way or the other on my opinion of Vic Mignogna. You're wrong, try again. |

Those were props. The script required casts to be near the reactor containment, which was the heart of a nuclear aircraft carrier and highly classified. US Navy didn't approve that scene to be taken on board and Paramount made props instead. |

True, they weren't allowed anywhere near the reactor compartment (which was and still is top secret) and so that one scene was done on a soundstage, but the majority of on-carrier scenes -- particularly Chekov's chase through the lower decks and across the hangar deck -- were shot on board USS Ranger (the scenes were set aboard Enterprise, but she was out to sea during the time STIV was shoting and so was unavailable). |

Is that really enough to avoid paying royalties? |

The font had nothing to do with the Vic = Republican equation. The anti-Gore message was a big part of it, and there could be other typically Right-leaning pictures and messages on his website (I didn't look at his site much, so I can't say). |

As an aside, (to maybe get the kids to watch the film) Colonel Dewey Novak of Eureka Seven reminded me of Lancaster's character; though admittedly, as the series went on into its later stages, the similarities started to dwindle. |

I don't know about laws in the US, but here in Canada it is illegal to advertise cigarettes, espeically to minors. Companies are law suit happy and I wouldn't want my favourite manga to be sued over something silly. |

Does simply showing someone smoking in some form of entertainment count as advertising? Is no smoking allowed to be shown in movies, comics, books, etc.? If they are, do they have to cover up the name of it so they are only holding unmarked boxes? If that's the case, well, that's a little silly. If not, then the Nana wouldn't be problem and if it was, then Nana would have to be edited A LOT, because someone is smoking in just about every chapter.

...Come to think of it, I haven't seen many smokers in movies lately, but keep in mind, this is all due to the whole non-smoker's movement. It's both good and bad, if you ask me. But just smoking an unmarked cigarette isn't advertisement, it just 'promotes' it, in the minds of those who are entirely against smoking. |

Smoking is fine, advertising tobacco companies is illegal. If there is a brand on the box then legally it would have to be covered up, but if one is just smoking it's not advertising a company so it's legal. It would be silly if it was illegal to show smoking and one had to censor it. |

It also has a lot to do with what the show is rated. In the States at least, it is not illegal to show what brand you are smoking or to say what brand(w/ company permission), however it is a widely accepted practice to cover up any brand names, making said product generic. So you really only see brands in older movies. However there is a movement to ban smoking all together in films, making any movie with smoking automatically a NC-17. So far that hasn't taken too strong of a root though. But it wouldn't surprise me if in the near future companies elect to just not show smoking at all, due to pressure from anti-smoking groups. I am not really sure if that would be a good thing or not. It might take some realism out of story making, and would limit the creative process somewhat. But then again, it would protect the companies from frivolous lawsuits, so its a tough call.

That convention rant was spot on for me. I had the misfortune of going to one here in the UK for business reasons a few years ago, and it scared the hell out of me enough to never want to go to another one again. Thankfully the man I was to meet was the same age as me and escorted me out as well as in. I was never so glad to be out of a place as I was outside of that convention.
