This was a pretty bad interview. How do you decide between limited animation? How do you feel about women in KlK? What do you see in the future? Have any new projects?

Answers to most of those should be pretty obvious, and they were. Why do an interview when you don't have anything even remotely interesting to ask?

Imaishi: I think some part of it has to do with me favoring strong, centered women--you know, like for action-heavy stuff--but the original story of Kill la Kill was actually meant to be done with all male characters. The scripts Nakashima-san wrote had that intent in mind. So we just changed the sex of the cast to female, and that's probably why the characters are so wild.

So, we would have a possible pseudo-fujoshi/possibly gar series? I haven't really seen the series and this is why I ask. One reason I haven't the series is the lack of a human/humanoid male lead that's a love interest for the female lead. This is 1 of my preferred tropes.

Well, we do not know how the interview was conducted. That may have determined the questions asked, and how those interviewed answered those questions.

Also, the answers given are dependent on the personalities of those interviewed and on the restrictions (if any) they have to operate under.

I didn't know, though I did suspect, that a decent number of Trigger's staff came from Gainax, so it was good to have that confirmed for me.

Mikisugi x Ryuuko is pretty popular with fandom (certainly it's my wife's favored pairing.) No real canonical interest in the show, but I wouldn't say it needs it.

And now i know why none of the characters (besides Mako´s mother) felt or behaved like women. Can´t say i am surprised as sex sells and so on.
Ninja Slayer is actually good and the fist half of KlK was fun but they need to team up with some of their previous Gainax goons to regain former glory. I understand that Trigger is actually successfully but none of their products so far came close to what the studio heads did in the 00s and i frankly lost hope in the studio from a writing standpoint.

And according to you, how exactly do women behave?

The closest the series gets is an implied male love interest for a wacky female sidekick, otherwise the series is pretty uninterested in romantic relationships. Strong friendships and familial bonds are plentiful, though.

This really makes me wonder if the fanservice level was the same during its "all-male" version. XDDD

I'm more than likely in minority regarding this matter, but Imaishi always has been one trick pony for me. Granted, he's very talented animator and visuals in his shows are trippy as hell but story pretty much takes a back seat, it's ok if this happens in ova, movie or even one show, but it feels like his whole career consists of flicks of this kind (including Gurren Lagann). That being sad, I would eat Adult Swim show with his visual style if it has competent writing.

Well Gainax and as an extension Trigger have primly been an animators animation studio. Even the ones with good writing like FLCL, were animation first story second. Trigger may branch out into more story driven shows, but as you said it is unlikely, at least for the foreseeable future.

Patrick Seitz, regarding Mako x Gamagoori: "IT'S CANON, BITCHES!"

There are also hints of Sanageyama x Nonon, if Inumuta yelling "GET A ROOM" at them during one of their spats is any indication.

Interesting interview. It did read a little tense through text, but I really appreciate the Kickstarter question. I back animation projects pretty heavily, and LWA2 was one of the most exciting and rewarding. I'd also be heavily in favor of Williams Street and Trigger swaping cell numbers just to see what awesome, crazy stuff would result from it. Wink

I don't completely believe that because that would imply they intended a male!Ryuko to wear the stripper-ish outfit the whole time. Which would have been interesting but still there has to be more than that in the planning process. I'm surprised they didn't mentioned Cutey Honey in the interview even as a tongue in cheek homage to Go Nagai.

Yoshinari: We wanna become like Pixar, or P.A. Works, or Kyo-Ani.

In terms of being beloved by animation fans, having stellar visuals, and gaining a following so quickly with hit shows/films, yeah I'll buy that. But, Pixar has always been a family friendly CGI animation studio, P.A. Works are more malleable with different genres & have more intimate narratives rather than bombastic spectacles, and KyoAni has been the darling among otaku (and now) fujoshi fans. I wished he could have been more specific in how Trigger aims to remain relevant within the Japanese animation market rather than name three totally different studios.

Yeah the process if you include direction and animation was definitely more than a simple switch, but I take it they were referring to how the preproduction story changed initially. If you look at the production notes that they published in their newsletter, it was obvious once they made that switch in the initial draft, they had a lot of fun with the fanservice afterward during production:

Quote:
Everything in one angle! Perfect! According to our settings management staff, the one of our key animator noted that her breasts should bounce more in this scene.

To be fair they did give attention to fanservice of the male characters too

We have been receiving bunch of fan letters here at the studio. It has been a great motivation for our staff, and I would like to thank everyone in behalf of our studio. Out of those bunch, Iori Shiro seems to be receiving the majority of attention from our female fans. Comments regarding his forehead and his abs are quite common…. I can’t even remember a scene where we showed his abs in the series(laughs). I guess the focus of attention between men and women are pretty different.
