On the one hand, i'm glad Claymore is still remembered, as it's my favorite series. On the other hand, it's remembered in an unfortunate comparison to a tasteless exploitation show

It did have one really good thing about it. spoiler[The feeling of absolute dread when a Nova is created in their own world. Those scenes, with that music, it was pretty much perfect.]

Well, I don't mind picking this up to add to my first season. I enjoyed it but I know that the plotting is going to be a tad when I finally get a chance to read the manga.

I'm pretty sure Tia Ballard is Abigail Hartman.
I've check a few other sites and they say Tia always voiced Elizabeth and wikipedia has Abigail Hartman linking right back to Tia's page. On other notes though, i don't get Freezing, it's such a strange show I've never understood it. I tried to watch a few episodes and just got bored out of my mind |

I don´t get how Claymore (read the manga for the second half) and Freezing compare on even the most basic level as Claymore has a bleak mood, a high level of body horror/gore/torture + death (the US manga is censored), lacks a school scenario, or a male lead, or the harem nature and fan service or... Claymore is often called shonen Berserk which 100% fits and Yagi gave some interesting post mortem interviews on the manga. His Angel Densetsu is even better where proto Clare + Raki are introduced. On to series no.3.
LIM Dall-Young though managed to be become one of the most toxic names in online fandom due to half a dozen identical series @ once, hentai companions  and he even started another "highly needed" sequel i just saw. This time for Unbalance. The often compared Oh! great is a bit worse (but he is a skilled artist) and i find all of this more hilarious than anything.
He further started in 2000 and his MU profile has 23 series with more than 40 Freezing universe volumes listed so he is making money hand over fist. His best one is Kurokami where the manga is better but i gave up halfway though. On to the next 27 volumes... but i gave up after flipping though about 5 volumes years ago. I also looked at the hentai side stories. A 1/10 for these due to NTR + rape but at least he is honest. So A.C.G.T did Kino's Journey. More of that please. |

A very well written review. I like how things well explained things are without going full spoiler mode, like some other sites do in their reviews. After reading up on Freezing a fair amount, it does not seem like my sort of series, despite liking a fair amount of the concept that drives it.
On a different note, I'm curious as to what a tasteful torture scene with a female character is like? I understand that there are plenty of tasteless ones, for both genders, but I only really see them being called out when it involves women. So, I'm just wondering what constitutes a tasteful version of a scene like that? Is it something treated more like Bond's torture in Casino Royale (where the character completely refuses to give in)? Or is it something completely different? I am a pretty big fan of thriller films and games, such as MGS, and have seen plenty of torture scenes through these. Heck, you even have to play out the torture scenes in Metal Gear Solid. Granted they are all with men, so I was just wondering if it's technically a taboo to torture a female character, or if there's a way that just hasn't been really done. Also, I find the mention of Claymore awesome. It's a great series that was really enjoyable. If there are any fans of the Witcher franchise who read these comments that haven't read/watched Claymore, get to it. It has been confirmed that the Claymores actually were inspired by Geralt and his kind. Also, it's just an awesome fantasy series. One that is worth experiencing no matter what. |

If Abigail Hartman is just a pseudonym for Tia then she changed the way she voiced the character in between series. I listened to samples from both series before writing that part of the review, and Elizabeth's voice in the first series is crystal-clear, while it definitely isn't in Vibrations.
Some of this requires going into spoiler territory, but. . . 1. Both feature a heroine who is statuesque, blond, a blade-using warrior-type, and emotionally reserved at first. 2. Both have the heroine accompanied by a younger (and shorter!) male character who becomes enamored with the heroine and wants to save her from herself - and, in fact, does so over the course of the franchise. 3. In both cases the heroine is initially very put-upon by others of her warrior class and even seriously comes to blows with certain of them. 4. In both cases the warrior-types are all female because of compatibility issues, have gained super-human capabilities due to being infused with elements connected to the enemy, and can potentially become the enemy if they power up too much. 5. In both cases some of the warrior-types (including the heroine) learn to safely achieve half-Awakened forms. 6. In both cases that warrior-types are under the auspices of a monolithic organization which has warriors stationed all over the land and which has elements involved in conducting inhumane experiments designed to artificially produce additional/better warriors. (And in both series this leads to spoiler[clonelike creations which are designed to fight the most powerful foes but also end up running amok.]) 7. In both cases the warrior-types eventually break down into factional fighting. Granted, a couple of those similarities are common enough to be superficial, but a some of them are not common at all outside of these two series. |

Really, the only way to do a tasteful torture scene for either gender is to actually show as little of it as possible and still get the point across. That being said, torture scenes for female characters are a particular problem in anime because so often they are laced with sexual elements; this is exceedingly rare with male characters. (And I'm specifically excluding true S&M cases here.) In the case of this series, I label the electroshock scene a particular problem because the camera specifically focuses on her (panty-only-adorned) crotch when she pisses herself. As for how such a scene could be done without being tasteless? Just look at Claymore. The scene where spoiler[Miria is stabbed in the gut by the Awakened Being during the mission with her, Claire, Helen, and Deneve and pinned that way for a while] definitely counts as torture in my book but there are no sexual elements to it. |

Quite possibly. Also, Abigail Hartman voiced two characters in season one and Tia voiced both of them in season 2. Of course, if it really is two different people, the director may have decided that if Tia was to replace an actor in one role, then she may as well do it for two roles, especially since one is much smaller. Abigail Hartman is also credited with a role in Dance in the Vampire Bund, another series where actors used aliases. Then again, she is also credited with a role in One Piece, and that show doesn't give much reason for the use of an alias. I guess what I'm getting at is that I could believe it either way. |

Claymore has a lot of male wariors, Raki get´s a giant growth spurt in the 2nd half and the art styles are incomparable but i can only recommend all fans to look up Yagi´s interviews form last year which explain why he decided on the ending which i can live with but a lot couldn´t. He is way more forthcoming with information than most mangaka and we have the the same taste for 80s metal. What a man. I would compare Freezing to Sekirei (harmless but point/endless) and Quesar (no comment) and comparable series are starting to flood the market. Season 3 or an OVA is a given too and i got nothing more. (Claymore has "tasteful" actual torture just based on how the warriors are created which is ramped up later and there is attempted rape too but it works.)
I will avoid LIM Dall-Young and his home Comic Valkyrie in the future but that man is a marketing genius and i have to admire that. His editors must love him and his only other manga that stands out is a female teacher X student harem romance... so it doesn´t stand out. His first work Zero is kind of interesting though as it is so bad that i had to finish it as it is part proto Freezing, part Aki Sora and mechs sgow up at the end. Lol and it used rape as drama too. I agree, and i think Yagi deserves credit for exercising restraint, despite there being multiple torture scenes in the series. While the imagery can be symbolically or metaphorically sexual (that scene you mention, for instance), they are never meant to be a turn-on for the audience or anything other than horrific, and the female characters are never 'posed for the camera' or exploited. I'm glad to hear that you've read Claymore! I strongly feel that that series is underappreciated. With people wanting more stories with strong female characters, you'd think more people would be talking about it. |

I'll be honest- when i first read that he enjoyed listening to Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, and Edguy, I shed a few tears. My favorite mangaka is one of the few human beings who shares my taste in music! |

What caught me off-guard what the revelation of Chiffon Fairchild's true character in the last episodes; by itself, it can be pretty confusing to digest, but it was later explained in the manga, which is one of the reasons why I hope another season will be green-lit.
