Is Watanabe really a full on director in this show? I know Tachikawa was his assistant director on Terror in Resonance, and Watanabe directed the ED, but this is the first I'm hearing of this level of involvement.
edit: Nevermind, in the full encyclopedia entry it does just list Watanabe for the ED.

This show was definitely my top series of this last season. It would have been so easy to depict humans as terrible, but just about every time I thought somebody was a terrible person, the show would present some extra context. It wasn't necessarily enough to excuse their actions, but enough to see why the arbiters actually have a tough time passing judgment, even when they seem to have the facts at their disposal.
Also, maybe I'm off on this, but I expect to see a fair amount of cosplay from this show. Decim and Nona seem like prime candidates.

You're not wrong, I saw several DP groups at SakuraCon, mainly Decim, Chiyuki and Nona.
I enjoyed this show, and the OP is possibly my favourite of all time. My one complaint is that I found out towards the end of the series that most episodes have actual important content after the ED, which I had been skipping because the ED is comparatively dull. My life would not have been complete if I missed the one-man CHA concert.

I can picture it continuing in the same vein as Hell Girl - primarily formulaic with just enough world-building to prevent viewers from getting bored. That said, Madhouse doesn't often do second seasons.

Special mention for episode 9. It was fantastic, and the ending was absolutely wonderful and extremely painful. The music just made it so much better.

I really liked this show. It managed to be really emotional without ever feeling cheesy or forced. And as was mentioned in the review, it was really refreshing that it didn't resort to the simple "deep down all humans are cruel and evil monsters" theme, something I felt the other recent Madhouse production suffered a bit from (you probably know what anime I'm referring to). Plus I just really appreciated how much it made me care for some of the characters that only appeared in a single episode. That's good writing in my eyes. And the two part mystery episode just really amazed me. Although the reocurring characters were even more interesting, and I felt that Decim and Chiyuki got the resolutions they deserved.

I have already decided that I'm buying this when it comes out on Blu-ray, even though I have not watched a single episode yet; and there are plenty of reasons for this.
Firstly, the premise has me intrigued, and when combined with the art style of promo pictures and the few minutes I saw just to take a peek; it looks like my kind of show.
Secondly, it has received unanimous praise from both fans and critics alike; and more importantly; these fans and critics all like different types of shows, but find common enjoyment on Death Parade.
Understand, while this reason does add some fuel to the proverbial fire, it isn't a big deal because I really don't put too much stock in what fans and critics say. I have my reasons for this, after all, Kill La Kill has gained wide acclaim from both fans and critics and it's not really something I could get into. But, to the point; they're only other people's opinions, not mine; I need to see for myself when I'm curious and intrigued by something.
A similar situation to this with positive results would be when Puella Magi Madoka Magica broke out; and it's an anime that's been on my top favorites list for quite some, time now.
So what am I implying? While I can normally go into the vast majority of what I watch completely impartial and neutral, I'll admit that this is a rare occasion that I have high hopes for a given show; Death Parade being that.

Just dropping by to add some more praise to the post.
I wish they would add a second season to develop Ginti and Mayu (the hot blooded guy and the school girl). Also, we still don't know what the old man was up to. To this day I am still wondering what he meant by "God has already left this place", or something to that effect.
Still, this is one of those stories that leave you thinking for a couple of days straight (i.e. the good ones). Who deserved reincarnation? Do suicidal people go to heave or hell? Would you have pressed that button? Gosh, I DO hope they end up writing a second season...
Also...HO! DANCING THROUGH THE STARS!
