At the very least I had to look at it for a 2nd time in order to recognize it was, indeed, cosplay, and not from the game itself.
I think it's the shadows, the background, the pose... and the costume which is pretty damn well made. I think it deserved first prize, but Yuna's is fantastic as well.

In terms of shot composition the Yuna cosplayer should have won. But I have to say, the level of detail in the Undead Prince Ricard outfit was very high.

I agree on detail part, but costume still screams cosplay for always ignored lived-in look. At least he could made it look like grimy and dirty to reflect the world the character represents.

The photo of the person cosplaying as Yuna is the one I favor because of the beautiful sunset in the background.

That Yuna photograph was positively stunning.
The winner was good too. Don't really see anything special about that Yoko photo though.
