The DBZ characters are cheating. It's like they entered the contest more than once.

Some are WTF and some I agree with.
- F Itachi.
- Both, or well I only recall two, of Vegeta's was pretty good. Especially the first. You felt friggin' bad for him. And I remember thinking to myself that if they screwed that up in the English dub, I was gonna break something
- Makoto, WTF?!?! o-O Is it the message?
- Lockon made me cry and it was a good cry.

Surprised that number 20 is so low. That one affected me for days. I actually had to stop watching for a while.

Some of these are baffling.
DBZ characters? In a world where they can be revived easily?
Lots of characters above HUGHES!? I really had to hold it back when he died, the others above didn't hit as hard.
And Kamataro was in ONE small arc of Gintama, sure a lot of Gintama villains return, but you at least knew he was the villain in a short span with his quick introduction, it doesn't leave that much of an impression I'd say.

I can definitely see my number one was so impactful. I don't follow One Piece, but I did for a long while, and at that point in time it was pretty much believed that no one was going to die in the series except in flashbacks.
And number three: Mami's death is one that really sticks with you, even if she is alive at the end of the series.
That being said, I could not care less about Itachi, Light, and Lelouch. TBH I was relieved they killed off Light and Lelouch.
Lastly I would have chosen Nia over Kamina. Kamina's death is almost expected in retrospect. Nia's felt like a cruel joke.

Mitsuba Okita was very sad indeed. Wasn't really bothered about Itou Kamotarou.

Wow, that list...
1) Nagisa Furukawa. I very nearly cried and very few anime ever, EVER, manage that. Of course, Clannad; After Story was a double dose of feels, so that contributed.
2) Lelouch vi Britannia. Oh god the feels. I never really understood why so many people dislike Lelouch. I found him to be a great character who made the ultimate sacrifice. That too very nearly made me cry. I was speechless for a while.
3) ITACHI!! My favorite character in all of Naruto. He was just so cool and he sacrificed so much, just so that his brother and his village could live peacefully. And even though problems arose, he stuck to his guns and even in death he still wanted the best for everyone. Too bad it took his second death to really drive home who he was to the person he cared for most.

I looked at the list and thought I was fine because I pretty much knew about all the mentioned characters fates, or else didn't really care about the series they were in.
Then I came to the forums and read that Nia dies in Gurren Lagann. Eh, what?! Not...Not in the episodes that've aired on Toonami...not yet...
Well, that shows me not to assume I'm "spoiled enough" about a show that originally aired in 2007! Ugh!

Lelouch!? Did he even...really die? Maybe my memory is crappy but I could have sword it was hinted at that he didn't...??? Oh well, it wouldn't have bothered me anyway. Rolo's however...DID! Yeah he wasn't the best person but the way in which he sacrificed himself and died for Lelouch made me cry and I normally don't even cry when real-life people die! (Weird I know...)
On my personal list, other than Rolo, definitely Kamina, Hughes, and Nina. And my evil roommate thinks it's perfectly okay to make jokes about their deaths!

For me, it's Yang Wenli's, Reunthal's and Reinhard's deaths in "Legend of the Galactic Heroes"
Also, Rider's last charge in "Fate/Zero"
But Raoh's and Ceasar's deaths also definetely in my top

I do recall there being a very short, extra clip at the end of the last episode that showed Lelouch was the one driving the cart. He just kind of smirked and then it cut to black. Someone said that was fake, but it seemed to fit very nicely. Then the guy who wrote the story said that he wanted to leave it up to the viewers to decide whether or not Lelouch lived. So that last clip was cut from the home video release. Either way, his death has just as much meaning. If he did, truly die, then his sacrifice achieved exactly what he wanted it to. If he didn't actually die, then his 'sacrifice' still achieved the same result. In addition to that, C.C. is no longer alone in that case since Lelouch is with her. So really either outcome doesn't change the effect of his death.

The only one of those that truly impacted me was Maes Hughes.
But I guess everybody has forgotten LoGH, because the deaths of Yang Wenli and Oscar von Reuenthal impacted me the most. Oh, and Bernie in Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.

Gah! You just had to remind me about Bernie. May he rest in pieces... of hamburger...
On a similar Gundam note now that I've been reminded. NICOL!! My god his death was so sad. And it was shown while they played the freaking piano song that he wrote!
