I watched this film in Japan with some friends when it finally came to BD/DVD. And I have to say, it's a great movie with a nice ghibli-like story and characters, but what REALLY captured me was the animation. It felt so... real...? Maybe not "real" per say, but really, really smooth, with lots of realistic movement. You'd almost think it was partially rotoscoped. Except I don't know how you can rotoscope mystic creatures that aren't even human, so I doubt it.

I can't wait until this is released on DVD. I may have to try and grab a ticket and see this since I missed the first 5-10 minutes when it was screened at the NYICFF back in 2012. But I really don't like going to the IFC. I hope that it will be screened in the larger venue.

I will point out that the IFC Center web site says that it will open on July 25th, not 23rd. So it might be worthwhile calling them before making any sort of travel plans.

Letter to Momo was well-made... but safe... generic... borrowing Ghibli's style way too much.
Although worth watching because of Hiroyuki Okiura's direction. Wish he made more movies, the animation of his movies are always gorgeous from Jin-Roh, to the Cowboy Bebop Movie opening sequence. Kind of wish he had a more individual voice. Jin-Roh's style mostly came from Oshii and Letter to Momo is too Miyazaki. But the animation side of his movies is always great. |
