I have noticed sometimes anime and manga will be out on the shelves a day or two before the company website says it will be. On monday at Borders I got the current shonen jump, Bleach 18, and One Piece 14 which were supposed to come out on tuesday. So at convention's is anime usually availbe a few days before its "supposed" release? So at Fanime would it be possible to buy Naruto box set 3, Bleach DVD 4, and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya since it is an anime convention?

It's not uncommon for Store to put out their titles earlier then originally suppose to be announced. Most of the time it's just a mistake, but I know that my local anime store puts out there titles as soon as they get them. Lots of time company will bring titles that are going to be release soon prior to there street release, for conventions so it's always a possibility. |

The truth is nobody really cares about anime, it's a niche product, so they probabally don't get peanalties or fines put upon them from distribution companies for putting it out ahead of time like big US based companies like 20th Century Fox or Warner Bros. would. So it's up to the store to figure out when they want to put it up. They usually wait for the date though. I have tons of stuff that ships to me from online retailers days or even weeks ahead of time, however.

you are so fortunate that you can buy the real video.because in my country we only can buy piratic one although it is very cheep.most time we download them by BT,but right now my computer can't use BT!
and i love bleach,one piece,and naruto very much too.this nowadays these storys are all in the high tide. |

It's probably up to the publishers or distributors to allow the retailers to sell them before the actual release date. The retailers might already received the anime DVDs but if they're not allowed to sell them, then they can't sell them. It's not usual with anime since most anime retailers do sell them before the release date since they got the green light to sell them. I usually get my pre-ordered anime DVDs before the actual release date.
It should also apply with the convention. As long as they have the green light to sell them. They can't just sell them before the release date because it's an anime con. Publishers might have a booth at the dealers room at some cons and they might have the cons exclusive like you can buy new titles that aren't officially out yet. |

That can be true but trust me stores do get fined sometimes. I worked at a Sam Goody/Suncoast for 3 years and we got fined a few times just in my tenure there. Three of them due to anime and morons putting it out before hand. Now larger chains like Borders or Best Buy can afford, and usually laugh, at the fines if they do get any. As for cons, many vendors there will sell the product early. I mean it is their product so they can do what they want. Otakon 2005 I got the first special edition volume of Samurai 7 which wasn't due out for another 1-2 weeks. Well worth it too considering I got it Sunday on sale for only $30 bucks. |

Yeah, I know what you mean. I work at Best Buy and I'm always pulling titles off of the shelves from the Anime, Sports/Fitness, and Miscellaneous sections because they put it out on the shelves before the release date. I'm pretty sure we don't get fined (we might though) but having it out there is just a bad thing waiting to happen.
Though, there are sometimes mistakes in our system when it comes to new releases such as Gunbuster. Our system said that it was gonna come out 2 weeks after the real release date. So we got our shipment late... *sigh* |

Del Rey is the only Manga company that has strict release dates of their items. All the others either ignore it or have them, but don't strictly enforce it.

Since Conventions are a whole different kettle of fish, most vendors will try and get titles early for the attendees. And I don't think that the companies care all that much.
As for new releases out early in stores...well like others have said, sometimes it doesn't matter, other times, they could get in trouble. For example: if it was the next volume of Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball whatever, it probably didn't matter. BUT, if it was the Disney release of their newest Studio Ghibli film, yeah it mattered and they had to be careful. When my mall had a Suncoast, that's exactly the way they did it. The one manager would sell me the anime titles that I wanted on the Friday or Saturday before the Tuesday they were actually released. But, he flat out refused to sell me the Disney/S.Ghibli stuff until the actual release date. God, I miss having music and video stores in my mall... |

Hmm.. the only reason I'm adamant about keeping release date as the actual "release" date is that there was this one time that Ghost in the Shell was advertised in the Sunday ad. And it also noted the release date for that item. Sometimes if we put it out early, it gets sold out and then you have people coming in on that date and finding none in stock. *sigh* but I'm just someone who follows the rules too much... |

But if it's against the law to put a product on the shelf before the release date, they shouldnt be out there in the first place. Regardless of whether it's Halo 3 or "Obscure Anime Vol. 4"

But if they do, I believe its up to the publishers to pursue action and, frankly, I doubt many (if any) anime or manga companies really give a damn.

It's not against the law. It's against the agreement the store signs with the distributor. I think, though, that most of the time people will just open the dvd boxes and put what's in them on the shelves on Tuesday morning (or Monday night, I guess) and don't have the release date for everything memorized. |

I'm pretty big on picking up new releases at Best Buy because they break street date by as much as two weeks.
I picked up Kurau Vol.1 last month and it's obviously not supposed to be out for a few more days. |
