I was checking out the Rightstuf sale, and was eyeing this boxset, wondering what kind of series it is. Is there humor ? Fighting ? Serious ? Drama ? Hows the art work and story ? Does the series ending leave you with the " Oh crap, now I need to go buy the manga " feeling ? Unresloved endings irritate me.
Also, thanks for the feedback on ANgelic layer, I thought it was a decent anime, imo.

Well first of all, it is a CLAMP title.
It is a older series so the artwork corresponds to that but it is still wonderful! As for the rest, yes there is humor, fighting both with swords and with magic, there are serious times and dramatic times. The story is wonderful! This is one of my favorites, not in my Top 10 but still a favorite.
The characters and story are well developed in my opinion and have withstood the test of time so far, IMO
The first season does not leave you with the "oh, crap" feeling nor does the second. The second season does lean more toward characters and emotions rather that the action of the first season. I actually enjoy the second season better.
Get this series. Get both seasons. I really don't think that you will regret buying this one.

I love it! I love it! I love it! I love it! I love it!
Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the first series I watched and after watching it I fell in love with CLAMP in a serious way.
It's about three schoolgirls in a magical kingdom so you should be able to guess the type of story it is, it has humour, love, sorrow, danger, excitement and all the other stuff.
I thought the first series was better than the second due to the storyline but I enjoyed the second anyway as it was more Magic Knight action.
Now you can get both series in one box so I would recommend it.

I found the series a bit hard to get into, maybe because it's an old title that's filled with the cliches of other old titles of the magical girls genre that I've seen during the eighties and ninties, but you might find it enjoyable if you're a fan of the genre.

I love CLAMP's art and will say that I watched both Rayearth and Sakura for the visuals. The original art pieces have some of the best use of color I've seen. The story was far harder for me to get into compared to Tokyo Babylon, X or the amazing Seiden (RG Veda) which I followed every month during it's original manga release. The big RG Veda artbook is one of my all time favorite artbooks.
Overall Rayearth feels targeted towards a younger fan. I believe it ran in Nakayoshi, where Sailor Moon was released. I'm not a big fan of Nakayoshi titles.

I agree with Lydia's post. There's humor, fighting, a little relationship thing going (a few more in the second season), there's definately some seriously dramatic parts. I'd tell you where, but I fear it'd be a spoiler. The art work is dated, but it's still good. I'd say on par with Detective Conan or Dragonball Z. Both seasons do end and don't really leave you hanging. Not that I recommend it, but you could just watch the first season and feel satisified that it ended. Now, the main characters, Hikaru, Umi & Fuu do call each other's names out often in the midst of battle or some touching sad moment, but it's not really to the level of annoyance that Rena & Shugo's constant calling was in .hack//twilight. There's also several chibi moments in the first season, mainly as a humor device. I found it endearing, but I know others have found it ridiculous and intolerable.
As for the manga, I didn't read the first half (1-3 = the first anime season) and only the second half (4-6 = the second anime season) a few years ago and when I saw the second season recently there was some major differences in my mind. However, I might have forgotten part or not remembered correctly or something, so it'd be benefical to wait for someone else to also chime in on the manga part. I can say with certainity that 2 characters have different fates in the manga. While one passably unnoticeable, the second one changes the story (second season) a bit. And the scenes leading up to the ending are different. But regardless, you wouldn't have to read the manga. Personally, I want to, but I haven't picked it up yet. (A friend had lent me 4-6 a few years ago.)

The story line of MKR Season two anime and the story line of the manga vols. 4-6 are very different. The most of the characters are the same as is the general story line but there are two characters that are specific only to the anime and because of those two, the outcome of the anime story and many of the character motivations end up being different.
They are both very good in their own way and I enjoy them both for what they are.

To answer you aboutwhat it has in it it's mostly a fantasy title. It has a good amount of drama in it with a sprinkling of comedy. The visuals and characters look "cutesy" to me. Again it is a clamp title so it's to be expected. Overall it's a very good show and I own them myself on vhs. Gotta convert it to dvd one of these days.

 VHS! You slacker! |
I had to convert Evangelion, Kenshin, BGC 2040, Nadesico, Dragonball Z, Rayearth, and Street Fighter 2 V to dvd. I only got so much money
To quote Dane Cook, "I did my best!!!"

...And what's wrong with owning it on VHS? Yeah, I have a copy of the VHS boxset buried somewhere under a pile of DVDs. I suspect it's been at least 9-10 years since I last watched the shows.
ps: I had to give my head a shake when I saw Mokona (or a Mokona like thing) pop up in xxxHolic (I haven't watched Tsubasa Chronicle but there's a Mokona character there too). |
Teasing, just teasing! Of course, when I bought my DVD player back in 2000, I became a Holy Roller convert and bought $1,000 of DVDs the first week...The Manager at Suncoast LOOOOOVED me! (and he still wouldn't give me an extra discount ).
Well, since Tsubasa is using previous CLAMP characters and re-writing them a bit differently, why not use Mokona as your inter-dimensional guide. He's certainly better than Kero-chan would be!
