Definitely agree about the drama. These middle episodes, especially the haircut scene and Sousuke being recalled back to Mithril are the reasons I thought TSR was better than the first series.

Because you're not giving it a try.
Wasn't this pretty well spelled out in the review?

I loved the review on this because it hit all the key points on the head. Tthe dvd was awesome. my only complaint is that there aren't comentaries with the DUB actors- i love hearing those on any dvd.
and that book is hard to read...

Awesome release, this is turning out to be my favorite FMP series and about the dub, I would've switched to it permanently a long time ago if it weren't for Kaname's voice -Luci Christian made her sound way too bitchy and nerve-grating than what she sounded in the JP version, but I on the other hand prefer Sousuke, Tessa and most of the other characters in English.
In the first DVD I watched the first, third and fourth episode in English, but immediately switched to Japanese once Kaname began to speak in the second episode.

No. I've listened to all three series' dubs and am thoroughly unimpressed to this day. In addition, the review does little to make me jump on the bandwagon. "Superb" and "surpass" just don't sit well with me. Why even have a Japanese track then, since it's utter bullplop compared to the likes of Chris "God" Patton and Luci "I'm better than Satsuki Yukino and can replace all and any of her roles, especially the Sonozaki sisters in what ADV will rename The Japanese Track of This Anime Sucks, So Let's Redo It With Such a Superb Performance That We Surpass Those Gimpy Seiyuu" Christian? Just fire every voice actor back in Japan and have the English track as the only option with Japanese subs for the next series in both countries.
Better yet, let's make all anime in Houston. The voice acting is just that good. This way, you don't have to worry about overseas licensing from Japan to the US, and fansubbing will cut down dramatically because ADV will be the new anime masters of the universe. And all we have to do to get their stuff cheap is wait for Right Stuf to throw it all in the Bargain Bin.
Then we can change the name of this site to ADV News Network, since anime in general will just automatically equal "ADV goodness" in every carnal and sensual aspect we can possibly conceive. I mean, I have so totally wasted my time and money investing in low-quality, bilingual DVDs that are just filled with the poison known as Japanese, when I could've just pushed a single button on my remote to surpass this monstrosity and enjoy myself to a superb level of entertainment and life-changing rejuvination that is ADV dubbing . God, or should I say Chris, what have I been wasting my life for ?

Too much repression. I don't recommend it for anyone, especially myself .

All I can say to you Tony and Zac is.....WOW. Have you been hanging out with Nagisa more Tony? I'm gonna have to agree with both sides on this. I know, how the hell do I do that right? Well, for starters I think FMP's VA jobs have been pretty bad to date. I normaly like ADV, sorry Tony, but this is not one of their better shows. I think Luci and Chris could've done better. I like a lot of their work, just not this one. I know you'd be happy Tony though is Oaklahoma had actually been ADV's studio in Houston but I still think they produce some quality work. One example being Gilgamesh. Now, I agree with Zac because people should give it a shot. You never know when something might not suck, even if it has up to that point. I try and give each series a shot to do my part in supporting the industry. Now, I also do Netflix so if I'm horrible disgusted with the performance I send it back and take a bath in holy water. I take some satisfaction in knowing I didn't blow 25 bucks to find out the show/VA job sucked. So in closing, can't we all just get along????

I would assume by "surpasses the original" the leading roles are also included in the statement. I've only heard the Fumoffu dub, and while it is pretty good, I would have to disagree that Patton and Christian's performances surpass Seki and Yukino's. Patton does a good job with Sousuke, IMO, but his voice doesn't have the necessary firmness that Seki delivers and Sousuke much needs, both in comedical and serious situations. I do actually like Christian's Kaname, but Yukino is one of my favorite seiyuu, and I thought her performance as Kaname was stellar; she had just the right amount of agitation in her voice when needed, and the right amount of hopelessness during the latter parts of Fumoffu. Both are veteran top-notch seiyuu, and deliver top-notch performances in an anime which IMO features one of the strongest cast of seiyuu out of all the series out there, a voice cast which I'm skeptical to believe can be surpassed so easily.

Just a small point to pick at here. Kadokawa granted production rights to ADV, not FUNimation. Kadokawa Pictures USA maintains their rights to the series in the U.S. and basically contracted FUNi and ADV to do the work.

I don't normally actually do much posting online in forums like this, but felt like chiming in here. I can't speak for other actors, but I never set out to surpass anyone across the ocean. I never think comparatively like that when working on anything, because...well, why would I? Most of the time I'm just glad to be working and doing my best to have a good time and make other people's jobs easier in the face of oft-times tight deadlines. If I'm asked my opinion about Japanese vs. English actors, I honestly assume that the situation in Japan is the same as it is here - that their acting pool is comprised of actors at varying levels of ability and experience. Not that I can really tell, because my Japanese is super limited, but that's just reality. I'm asked to audition for things and do my best to make the director/producer of whatever studio or company who hired me happy...which is my job as a full-time actor in and out of the anime industry. While I feel better about some projects than others, at the end of the day you attempt to do your best and feel good about your effort, knowing that in any creative, subjective medium there will be people who aren't going to like it. I'm not offended - that's absolutely part of the territory and I enjoy being a fairly discerning critic myself about any number of things, including my own skills. The only time I get a little red is when I feel people sweepingly insinuate that ALL English voice actors aren't real 'actors'...that's just a bit frustrating and, to my mind, incredibly myopic. While I've enjoyed the opportunities and experiences anime has brought into my life, there are other industries out there and many of us have trained and worked for years voicing all manner of radio/tv commercial work and industrial gigs, as well as appeared in all variety of on-camera work and theatre...but I totally digress.
The point I wanted to make is that while it may be projected onto us that we compare ourselves to the Japanese or think in superior terms, that's untrue of myself. Case in point, I just met the creator of Princess Tutu and the Japanese Ahiru, and was so honored and glad to get to express my gratitude for the series and my total admiration of their work...and completely blown away to have Ikuko Itoh praise my work and sign my dvd cover 'for Duck'. I was so moved. I loved that it all got to be good...that we could all just love the show and appreciate the effort that went into both tracks as creative people. I thought Satsuki Yukino was hell on wheels great as Kaname. I enjoyed hearing her in my ear and I assume she is awesome. I was directed to do what I did and feel good about my portion of the programming. What one person thinks is teenage-fiery and fun someone else thinks is bitchy and harsh. Yay subjectivity! The show is a special one to me and I'm glad I've gotten to be a part of it, and however you feel about the dub I'm just glad people are enjoying the series based on it's merits.
oh, and being 5'1" I would never use the word 'gimpy'.
=)

No, that was great. I liked reading a bit of "what goes on in a voice actor's head." I'm not the biggest fan of dubs, and I have to admit that I have only heard a tiny bit of the Full Metal Panic! dubs, but I can appreciate that actors, including dub actors, are just doing their jobs too. Feel free to post again if you ever have time. That was interesting.

Don't mind Tony. He always gets worked up over dubs, especially ADV's dubs for some reason.
I've actually never heard anyone insinuate that American VAs think they're better than Japanese VAs; that's a new one to me. In my years of interviewing American voice actors, I've encountered my share of arrogance, but never the attitude that somehow they're "better" than their Japanese counterparts.

Thank you, Ms. (Mrs.?) Christian for your reply. As oppressive as I appear to be towards ADV, I admire and commend you for your professionalism and willingness to accept my rather harsh critique. After all, you're just doing your job, and as people it's impossible for all of us to please everyone everywhere. No personal offense meant. I'm just glad to see how well you've taken it in stride, as any professional in their field should. Best of luck to you and and the company on your future works.
