Answerman, I love you for your answer about the ameri-manga and manwha, you expressed my feelings quite truely in words that I could have never found. Thank you.
And, on the rant, I buy stuff I've watched fansubbed, for instance, one of the first series I ever saw fansubbed, Mai-HiME. I currently have DVDs 1-4 and I'm going to be ordering 5 and 6 in about two weeks. I find You Tube to be rather useless for fansubs, though. Unless it's a fun little 4-5 min scene from a series you enjoy. (Such as a vid. of the scene in Haruhi when she gets the computer club to give them a free computer). Or for instance, the opening scene of the second story arc to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni... I love that video clip.

I definitely have to agree with the ranter... YouTube has waaaayyyy too much available.
However, I'm also sure it could be a very successful marketing tool for the anime companies... Once you license something and get an episode out, put it up! That way people can see if they want to give the show a try with the first DVD. That's all I really want and need myself as a buyer.
I must confess, I am a fan of checking out shows before they come over and watching them before they're licensed, so I guess I don't have so much room to talk (and those who wait for new episodes to be released by fansub groups do have a bit of a wait for themselves, too) but if a show is good and I like what I see, at least I go out and buy it when it's licensed, too. And if I don't like it, chances are I didn't watch it all in the first place.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it could go either way, but for the love of Pete, get most of that anime off of YouTube!!! Especially the licensed stuff!!
And anime companies should put some first episodes up there for people to preview, much like what ADV did with IGN (I think that was the site) and the first episode of Air Gear. I don't know how that worked out for them (I personally decided I didn't like the show), but it seemed like a really good idea, and I applaud them for doing it.

Concerning which reviews are toughest to write: I am totally in agreement with Zac on that. Reviews on those middle-of-the-road titles usually take me twice as long (or more) to do as those on titles that are clearly good or clearly bad, especially if it's a title I don't care much about and probably wouldn't be watching/reading if I wasn't reviewing it. And the second or third review on a mediocre series, those are the toughest of all.
Concerning Original English Language "manga:" I've recently read (and have reviews pending) for a couple of good ones, so I know they are out there. Both of the creators were established professional artists, though - one an illustrator for various high-profile magazines, the other has worked on major titles for several American comic book publishers - so their qualifications were far above the norm compared to what Zac's talking about. Just have to look for quality creator creds, I guess.

Nice column Zac!
About the manga question...it makes me sick when I go into the bookstore and someone with a FMA hoodie on talks loudly about how manga is the best thing ever and all american comics suck.
The filler question made me want to drop kick kittens. I mean seriously- people if you don't like the fillers don't watch them. Besides naruto's fillers are ending anyway. A lot of people actually enjoy the Bleach fillers and Kenshin well...that was just a bad descion on the producers part.
In short, turn of the you tube or b_to___nt or whatever and just wait.
And speaking of youtube- cheating yourself out of an experience? WTF. You mean the experience of standing in line at Best Buy? I can somewhat understand because I do buy DVDs myself but still. if you feel so guilty why don't you turn off the computer? And why unreleased anime? Let's face it not every title is going to be picked up here. its the only way you're going to get to see it...buy a manga or some merchandise like plushies or something at your next convention.
The whole argument seemed like a rather drawn out question: should I be watching this and well never mind its ok to watch it anyway. sometimes.
I personally enjoy youtube- I only watch shows I can't get my hands on like One Piece (although who wanted to get their hands on the US release of that). I then buy some plushies, shirts, & posters at the anime con.
I do buy the anime I watch on youtube. (if its not mutilated) I previewed a few epsidoes and picked them up! I also think youtube is a good way to stop people from downloading to keep-this way you just watch the show and thats it. You didn't buy the show from some creepy chinese guy overseas.
Youtube has gottan out of hand. I think fansubs are alright but once all of the DVDs are out here i think they should take them down. Or like I said before fansubbers should have a 30 epsidoes limit between them and the licnesed release. And don't get me started on the english dubs posted. That is just stupid. (unless its from the orginaly compnay)[/spoiler]

I get really, really pissy at the elitist fans who think that anything Japanese in inherently superior. I completly agree with the person who wrote the question regarding animerican manga when they said,
Quote: | I understand if they actually read some of the material and dislike it, but to just reject it for its nationality seems to me to be narrow-minded to the point of prejudice. |
I judge each "graphic novel" that I come accross by the story, and the art quality, not by what nationality the person who wrote it is. Im an avid fan of Marvel comics as well as manga titles. I tend to agree with Zac, most American manga titles are pretty bad. But it isnt beause they arent Japanese. Goodness. Im as much a fan of Japanese culture as the next anime lover, but I dont hold with the idea that every other culture is inferior, and therefore cant make good art.
...mini rant. My take on the subject. I pretty much completly agree with the answer to that one. Most non Japanese stuff isnt that good, but not for any inherent racial reason.
Actually, I am of the opinion that American graphic novels turn out better when they arent trying to be manga in the first place. They try so hard to be something they arent, and they forget that they have a cool cartooning style of their own thats just as good, just different.

Nice DeviantArt swipe, well played. I love how the Flake of the Week starts out strong but begins to doubt his "pretty good opinions."
"Fillers" has become one of my least favorite buzzwords (aside from "blog"). Everywhere I look among people in the anime community this word is popping up. Maybe the hordes of Bleach and Naruto fans are generally more vocal about their disgust. I do regret Rurouni Kenshin TV's lackluster conclusion, but watching five minutes of Trust/Betrayal more than makes up for that.

I'm still waiting on a license for Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~, because I would very much like to own it on DVD.... But that's been done airing for over going on two years and no one has picked it up yet. Same for Da Capo, I'd really like to see that on DVD here....

Either you're kidding or you shouldn't be alive, either way that post doesn't belong here.
EDIT: I just realized this one doesn't either, sorry for the spur of the moment while i'm tired as hell semi-flame. ;
EDIT 2: Whoah, "" is an emote here.....

I personally don't like to buy a series unless I've either seen part of it or am really sure I'll love it, considering how much it costs to buy an entire anime series on DVD. However, I really can't stand to watch fansubs on YouTube because the quality is usually quite poor. I'd honestly prefer to not watch a series at all than try to watch grainy streaming fansubs. Or is that part of "the experience"?

Thank you for you honest opinion of American manga. I was starting to think I was alone in thinking Bizengast was utter crap. X_x
Ah... I still await a proper final season to Kenshin... it'll happen some day. Nah, more likely than not there'll be an OAV even worse than the last one instead.

It's a little thing called supporting the industry. If everyone watched fansubs off the internet, firstly the distributors and eventually the original creators would not be making any money. That means no more anime.

You do realize what would happen if everyone adopted your attitude, right?

Yeah, the OEL manga dungheap is one of the reasons why, should I ever get around to doing my dream comic book about the kick-ass martial arts flight attendants, I would never apply the "manga" label to it as I wouldn't want it to be tarnished by association.
As for YouTube, I've already bought Strawberry Marshmallow after having watched it there, I'll surely be buying The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya when it's released, and I'll buy Ouran High School Host Club and Windy Tales if and when they're licensed. Like watching anime at an anime club, it's a good way to preview shows, but if I like a show at YouTube, I look forward to the day that I can own a hard copy of it on DVD, both for the moral obligation of paying the creators and distributors of the show that I enjoyed and because crappy YouTube resolution is no substitute for even a standard NTSC television resolution picture.

......I'm in agreement with the poster above me on this one; you remind me of another forum user I was debated with on another site who tried telling me that 20 dollars for an anime dvd "is too overpriced" and gave me the whole "the anime industry is lining its pockets". I hope you're kidding otherwise I would say your just a parasite, hurt the anime industry overall and make my tummy churn.
Anyway... as far as the American and Korean manga I don't have much experience with either. However I was unfortunately highly mistaken in buying Bizenghast and was kinda irritated I spent 10 bucks on it I previewed a chapter of dramacon from tokyopop's website and loved it...I just still haven't gotten around to getting it, heh; the only Korean manga I own/have read is Model and quite honestly I like the art but the story kinda lacks :\. Although other American "graphic novels" can also be absolutely amazing, such as Roman Dirge's Lenore, Voltaire's Deady, and just overall Neil Gaiman.
Concerning the rant part of the infamous youtube. I will admit that I am guilty of viewing unlicensed anime via other ways that I won't say due to not wanting this to be deleted. However, for goodness sake fork over the cash. I mean I was watching Tsukuyomi Moon Phase a few years ago when it was airing in Japan, and aside from what's mentioned by the review on ANN as sometimes it seems kinda "pervy" due to Hazuki's age (I'm in total agreement on that one) I still absolutely loved the show; just bought the First Dvd + art box with xmas loot . So I'd say summon up the self-control and fork over the cash if you have it available.
As far as a remedy to the youtube situation I know that when google bought it the Japanese copyright holders of various media posted on youtube called for the content to be removed and if/when google does a more "concerted" and renewed effort as they called for after the first attempt the fansubs should be removed, but i'm just speculating. Although it would be nice if ADV and other companies try and put out the first ep for download like they've done with a few new titles (Coyote Ragtime Show, Air Gear, Rumbling Hearts, etc) so that a fan can judge more than just by a trailer.
