Can we just all asume that all otakus range in weight. For every overweight one, their is equal ammounts of those who weigh normal to thin weight. Reason why they make anime clothing in S to XXL.
Though I do find it interesting most anime packin tshirts come in XXL or XL.
Like anything from sports to video gaming, you cannot group people into a category based on weight. You will find more otakus being overweight not simply for the fact more people today are overweight.
I myself consider myself semiotaku. Im thin, weigh about 125 and 5'10. Im not overly social but do have a regular girlfriend and do go out 1-2 times a week. I also work and attend college. My collecting and spending on anime, video games, and manga would place myself imo as otaku but its something I dont throw around.

I was pretty disappointed when my Eureka Seven LE came with a size XL (me being a size medium) and Bandai said they couldn't exchange for a medium because they only came in L and XL.
I wish that they gave you a card to mail away for the size shirt you want instead of "here take this size XXXL and be happy" attitude we get from retailers.

Um hum, I have about 40 or so Anime T shirts that I cannot weigh cause they would look like nightgowns!!!
They should either do mail in card offers or simply have differen boxsets with different sizes listed on the packaging!

Man, this has never occured to me before! I remember feeling a bit ripped when I received XXL T-shirts for my purchase of the boxset of GTO and the artbox of My-Hime and thought 'why the hell there was no option to select the size that you prefer for the T-shirt that was going to be included in the payment?'
I had no idea it was because of the general impression that otakus are overweight

No, I'm hawt, only secretly geeky, and a social fricking butterfly.
*laughs until tears come*
Did I mention modest?
Seriously, though I'm not always really social. There are times when I'd rather stay in and play video games or watch anime than go out with friends, but I think that's probably the same for most people.
Embrace your geekiness, you will feel better.

The question isn't if the stereotype is justified, the question is whether you personally fit the stereotype of what most people picture as an otaku--and that stereotype is that you're either unhealthily scrawny or massively overweight. Doesn't mean that that's true of all otaku any more than the statement that all women can't drive.
Since I haven't contributed to the main question of the thread, let me say that I don't really fit the otaku stereotype all that well. I did pretty well back in high school, but these days? Not so much?
Scrawny or fat? Nah, pretty much right in the middle. 6', 180 lbs....not scrawny, but not exactly "in shape" either.
Sweat/greasy? No way. I shower at least once a day, and will twice if necessary. Nothing I hate worse that being dirty.
Anti-social? Nah, I go out a fair amount, and I'd say the majority of my friends (60-70%) don't share any of my geeky tendencies.
Talk endlessly about my anime/manga obsession? Only if someone else brings it up first.
Obsessive about anime? You bet.

Stereotypes... I think that it's impossible to avoid them so I will try like everybody else to see if I fit this otaku stereotype:
weight: No, I'm not fat, nor very thin (to take into consideration also this already mentioned part of the otaku image).. Since I was little I made a lot of sports: basketball, volleyball, tennis etc. (many others, including soccer) therefore if there is one thing I have learned is that I have to keep myself in shape. I don't eat very healthy, since I'm always busy, busy... but the sports help me a lot (tennis, particularly) and walking a lot.
anti-social: Most certainly not. I like people, I like to observe them, I like being around them and I just enjoy the variety that this world offers to us. Therefore I am happy to socialise (ok, I don't exaggerate with this, however) I have many friends and some very good ones.
obssessive: I may be one of the exceptions here: unlike some of you, I am not interested in the auxiliary materials related to anime or manga (figurines, posters etc.) Nope, I really don't care much about this. I spend a lot with manga and anime, that's another issue. I don't talk about anime or manga on and on (that's why I have ANN )
geeky: Nope, I have never been called that way. Except for the glasses that I have to wear when reading, I don't fit this image at all.
So I guess I don't feet this stereotype after all... Hmmmm....
