One of the best things about this site is that we can compile our own anime collection, rate them, and even customize our own little section for others to see. However, people are getting crazy with their ratings and it is becoming a nuiscence of mine. People who rate animes after only seeing one or two episodes. I feel that before you can successfully rate an anime that you need to see atleast half of the series. But what really takes the cake is what i saw last night. That was that 7-8 people have already rated the next naruto series a masterpiece WITHOUT A SINGLE episode being released yet and have pushed it to number ONE on the Weighted Average Top 10 list. I mean this is taking things waaaaaaaaaay too far. Can we do something about this or am I just over reacting here? I would really like to hear your guys' opinion on this issue.

This is the only thing I can think of at the moment. I myself will usually try and finish a series before trying to rate something, unless I don't like it which I go ahead and rate it and then put it in my Will Not Finish section. One episode might be a little extreme, but that's how the user does his/her own ratings, I don't think that there is much that can be done about it, unless the encyclopedia staff thinks otherwise.

I'm fairly certain that it hasn't been released here in the states yet, so could they be basing their votes on the fansubs?
Anyway, from what I understand, there is ALWAYS a series on here with their "fans" who will do that sort of stuff. I think ANN has a way of balancing it out and getting true ratings but I'm not sure how. Is doing that sort of thing to the ratings, considered spam? BTW - I rate my anime after seeing at least one DVD. But, I do, sometimes, change the rating up or down depending on how I feel about subsequent episodes or the ending. Which is why I changed Inu Yasha from "Very Good" to "Good." (stupid sucky ending...) EDIT: Just read what fighterholic wrote, along with Dan. Cool! BTW #2 - What's a 'trust algorithm"? Does it have something to do with how many times you submit info to the Encyclopedia and the Staff have to remove it? |

Not if there hasn't been a single episode released in Japan, as is the case with Naruto Shipuuden. [
I know there is some sort of system in place that takes a user's various ratings into account so that people who try to spam ratings or rate everything Masterpiece or Worst Ever won't have much of an effect, but I'm not sure how it all works. As for myself, I only rate something if I've finished it, or seen at least 3 or 4 episodes and decided I wasn't going to watch any more for whatever reason (usually meaning the show is either really bad or really boring). Frequently, I won't even rate it after only that many episodes and I'll just drop it and leave it unrated. Edit: Actually, I guess I did rate most of the series I haven't finished. Of course you can. Any title listed in the Encyclopedia is almost always available (or had been available) in Japan (note the word "almost": in rare occasions titles get canceled (Mardock Scramble) or its format switched (Onegai Friends)), and in many cases titles are exported to overseas countries earlier than the United States.
You've said it already: the "trust algorithm". I know its existence and basics, but I have no idea about the detailed mechanism nor I am permitted to chat about it even if I knew. All I can say is it has nothing to do with manually removing user's ratings; that would be endless.
Sure is, but how do you tell spamming and freedom of speech apart? What if someone just loves Tekken and hates Honey and Clover? You can't brand someone "spammer" just because s/he has a VERY different taste. |

I've always had this peeve of people who rate things BEFORE they finish watching it or rate things impulsively without thinking how it could affect the impression someone could get of that particular Anime. I wish that the rating of Anime can only happen if the series is done. But then again... I guess if a person is still impulsive, it wouldn't really matter.

I will only rate something highly after just a few episodes if I am really into it. I won't rate something that sucks if I didn't watch the whole thing. It may just have needed time to get better after I dropped it or, as Dormcat says, it just wasn't something I could get into. In that case I just put a reason for dropping it in My Anime.
Rating a title that hasn't even been released in Japan is just plain spam. Fan or not, it's uncivilized. |

I normally will rate a series as long as I've seen the first volume. I change my ratings every time I watch a new volume, though--often my first impressions change. Maybe it's a bit hasty, but it's hard to only rate something when you've seen *all* episodes--what about shows that have a huge amount of episodes, like Naruto? Or shows that only have a small amount actually available at the time?

But then what if the series didn't meet your expectations in the end? You can only rate once so i don't see a reason why not to make it count. You can always change your mind. But you can't change your rating once it's there. |

Actually, You can change your ratings as often as you want. Just go to My Anime, mark the box next to the title(s) you want to change and then hit the "Rate" button at the top, and you can rerate it/them.

Indeed, because you can change your ratings as many times as you wish, there is absolutely no reason to not rate a show as soon as you feel you have a good grasp of it. However, the important thing is that your rating actually reflects your opinion of the show as you watch more of it. Some shows have have pleasantly surprised me, and others have disappointed, but I've changed every one of my ratings if they need to be when I finish the series. Hack Roots for example: when the show first came out, I was loving it and loving The World all over again so I rated it an 8 as I followed it week to week. Why did I rate it so soon? Because everything that had been released up to then was worthy of an 8. However, the show got so angsty I lowered it to a 6 and then eventually deleted my rating because I couldn't decide on what to give it.
The truth is, sometimes I rate shows after the first episode, sometimes I still have no idea what to give it even when I'm done. It's not premature to rate something based on what is out at the time, because as of that moment, the ratings may accurately reflect the show. Of course, in the case of Naruto, they're obviously being premature; you can't accurately rate something you haven't seen even a sample of, as we all know manga =/= anime. |

I imagine that the system they use to avoid spammers is similar to what I have seen elsewhere.
If people are constantly giving 8/9/10 to animes the value of their rating decreases whereas if they give a broad range of ratings they are more likely to be taken into account. The problem with the naruto one I imagine is that as the only ratings are likely to be high ones it cant weight it correctly as even if it lowers the value of the high ratings the lack of low ratings would still leave it high. |

The same if a large percentage of their ratings are 1/2/3, too, I would imagine. That's why you look at the ratings sometimes and the graph bar for, say, "Very Good" is a bit longer than the one for "Excellent," even if they have the same number of votes. |

Sometimes i rate when i see only one or two episodes, because i don't see necessity for watching something like Shuffle! when I can see it's too sweet and too crappy for me. I still can't forget one scene where: the girl serve tea to Rin and all the time when he was drinking she looks like she was waiting for a bomb explosion, besides she looks like she could committed suicide, if only Rin said that tea was awful. that completely kill me. |

I actually have a rating system for how I do things. And a system for even adding the show to my "Seen All/Some" categories.
I'll add a show to my seen some if I've seen ONE whole episode from opening theme to after ending themesong, episode preview, funny skit. I'll only add it to my seen all, If i've seen it all, obviously. For rating it. I won't rate a show, unless I've seen at least 1/3 of the show/movie, of course by the time it's over, the rating would've probably changed, if it got better or worse. I also won't rate it if I vaguely remember it. (Like the Ranma movies, In my case.) So I won't just rate it without thinking |
