Is fat really part of the otaku stereotype? I don't see a higher ratio of obese people in the manga section of Borders compared to any other section of the bookstore. Like many posters here I'm on the thin side and have never been over 130 pounds. If anything people that I've known over the years tend to gain weight when they get married for some reason! My image of a typical otkau are based off of Genshiken and Otaku no Video, in which case I'm very much a typical otaku. My bedroom looks like the clubhouse in Genshiken complete with figures and MG kits, but minus the H section.

I'm almost the antithesis of an otaku. I have a budding manga collection (that consists only of the first 8 (and soon to be 9) volumes of Death Note) and I have a 280 gigabyte external harddrive dedicated to storing my anime but other than that I'm pretty much the opposite of otaku. I like to go outside and play certain sports. I'm very fit in terms of muscle (but i need to work out in cardio more) and can lift almost twice my own weight (about 130 pounds at 16 years of age). Like I said, I don't really have a particularly impressive collection of anime/anime paraphenalia. I'm a very social person and actually just threw a New Years party. And I wouldn't exactly classify myself as "weird" per se but the people in my high school who came from my public school are all pretty strange compared to most other people but it basically stems from being very comfortable with who I am and not feeling as socially restricted as some other people I know.

What do you mean almost twice your own weight how much can you life...not that I am doubting or anything but I heard it was very difficult and that even professional body builders and weightlifters couldn't lift twice their body wieght or at least they couldn't hold it for very long. Anyways I don't think you would lie so kudos for being able to do it. Wink

It seems people have been failing to see what I posted earlier in this thread. NOT ALL OTAKU ARE FAT. They are either fat or thin. We cannot limit the bodyshapes of otakus to one size. Take a look at Madarame from Genshiken, then you'll get my point.

I've become obsessed with collecting anime DVDs and manga as of late. Only American shows I watch: [Adult Swim]'s comedy shows, Seinfeld, the FOX Sunday lineup, South Park, Mind of Mencia, and stuff on the History Channel. I listen to German, Turkish, Finnish, Japanese, Romanian, and Russian music. I post on several message boards (Primarily [AS], and secondarily on here, gomanga.com, SaveOnePiece, and a few other sites) and chat on YIM (Rarely do I ever use AIM and MSN.....almost never.). History and science were my best subjects in school. I don't even watch sports (I used to watch pro wrestling; although it's fake, it was still fun to watch.). I play quite a few video games (Mainly PS2, X-Box, and PC).

Outside of DVDs and manga, I currently don't collect anime merchandise. However, I do listen to J-rock now and then (mainly via YouTube).

I used to be chubby back in high school (170-80 lbs.), but have long since lost a lot of weight (Now 140-150 lbs., within a few pounds of my graduation weight). I can be social or anti-social, depending on my mood at the moment. I spent midnight on New Year's posting on [AS], playing Quake, and watching the Dethklok Metalocalypse marathon (I taped the Bleach marathon the night before), and despite my outdated slang, it was all butter. Smile I don't go and convert everyone I see into being otakus, but I'm considering converting my stepsister and her boyfriend into such. Does that make me a dork, or do I blur the line?

I'm not able to call myself an otaku yet, but even if I were, I'd be a closet otaku, since I'm a closet fan now.

I'm not fat, although I was alarmed to see myself pushing 200 when I weighed myself for the first time in years. I enjoy physical exercise a lot but hardly ever get it.

I would much rather stay inside and read/play/games/watch anime.

I am antisocial, so there's one stereotype fulfilled. I don't need glasses (yet), though.

I can bench press twice (well, almost twice, minor hyperbole) my own body weight is what I meant. And I can only do it once before it pretty much kills my arms. Essentially it's the weight I lift to show off with but not anywhere near what I normally do because I'm sure it would be hell on my joints regardless of how hard it is. I don't think it's really important to outline my whole routine but when I bench I go from about 60 (as a warm up) to doing about 20 of 160-175 and then scaling back down to 60.

A Proper Pyramid then.

I partially fit the stereotype. More on the mental side rather than physical (6ft2inches, 14stone)

I actively partake in combative sports (boxing, martial arts) and have been practicing in them for years, since well before I attended university for the first time (Business and Management degree 2/ii...I'm going back again to get a Pharmacy degree this year...hopefully) . I just recently entered into a local amateur boxing league and my first fight (4 rounds, 3 mins) is coming up on the weekend.

But my socializing is pathetic, apart from when I go to the gym or martial arts practice, or am at work I live in my flat, eat in my flat, sleep in my flat, watch anime in my flat, paint the occasional figure in my flat, read manga in my flat, entertain my few friends in my flat...

The only time I really live my flat otherwise is to go and A) watch anime at a mates place (we have an anime night usually once a month at each of our 4 places of residence) B) to go and shop for stuff C) to go for a long solitary hike on somewhere like Dartmoor or Exmoor.

For example I spent Christmas and New Years in the office until 6pm then went home...I couldn't even be bothered to stay up for the countdown.

I think I have two really major blocks in my social development I don't like crowds of people and I don't drink...ever. How many parties/night outs/celebrations/holidays/etc don't involve alcohol?

I don't like crowds, I don't like alcohol...thus I certainly don't like crowds of people drinking.

*hmmm if that is the stereotype for being Otaku I'm far from it *hufhufhuff so I don't think I can be called Otaku at all .... but ... I LOVE ANIME... I would pass any movie/tv series/ other cartons/ other for a manga or anime dvd / movie.. and LoVe to draw anime!!.
I have to say though it is a personal tick of mine when they haven't completed the series I can't usually watch it (you can imagine what Naruto is doing to me, I'm DIEING!!! to see it *-_- ).
Otherwise I love clubbing and RnB (please don't kill me, I'm afraid to say this outloud in an anime forum), I'm usually, loud and abnoxious, social, freindly always perceived as naive and cute* (I think thats just a word for saying im a fat and nice girl, though I weigh 50kg is that considred fat?? anyways) and daft.
But at any schools/uni's I have attended I have been perceived as geeky, distant, smart-ass, arty and weird, yes I spent most of my time in the art room or library than with freinds, I love watching DND and playing CS (I also totally suck at this) I also don't like sport. *huahuhaahu so I geuss for the geeky bit I'm spot on! and I don't mind it at all Anime smile.
I'm very new to posting things on forums, and consider myself to be a total newb at anime compared to everyone here, I'm still learning and collecting information but there is just so much out there!!
I think though anime hasn't had the best of reputations it is becoming more popular amongst those outside the Otaku stereotype. Though maybe the total fanatics will stay fat, geeky, etc... when you consider there are only 24 hours a day you can spend only so much of your time on other things beside sleep and work chosing to spend it solely on anime would me no exercise and just for convenience make you anti-social by watching it at home, anti-social seems to produce quite abit geekness.. *HUAHUHAuhauauahuahua sorry just me blabbing again !! -_- !! all the best of new year and may this year be filled with more ANIME!!! YIPEEEEEE!!

Welcome to the club, dude. I almost get panic attacks when I'm in a crowd, and I hate alcohol.

I don't get panic attacks, I get moody and violent. I don't like myself when that happens thus I don't allow it to happen.

How can people not enjoy alcohol? Not to drag the topic into the mud but I always wonder why people don't like it. My grandmother is allergic to alcohol (yes, it is true and quite strange) so I understand cases like that but I don't understand why some people just flat out don't like it. Even though liquor tastes like crap (rum is like paint thinner mixed with cat piss) beer is actually enjoyable. At the very least, the effects are fun enough to outweigh the bad taste.

Some people dont enjoy having their senses warped, their judgemental skills put out to lunch and their mind dulled thanks to a few drinks. Plus the taste doesnt appeal to everyone either. I neither liked the taste of drinking or the affects thereof, much less the smell of it (alcohol REEKS you can smell it a mile away). Needless to say I dont drink...

As for the otaku stereotype, I dont fit it either. Im more anorexic than fat (100 lbs, soaking wet in the rain). I am obsessive about washing my hands (germs and dirt, ugh) but do not collect anime trinkets outside of the DVDs themselves. Dont even really buy manga (too expensive for such a short read). But I do love my anime. Anti social? Perhaps a bit, though I do enjoy being around small groups of people, larger groups make me nervous and anxious. I do wear glasses for distance vision, which means only when Im watching tv. And I love video games, and yeah thats enough about me. Very Happy

This also happens to me at times. I get moody and look to try to get out of crowds as fast as I can. When I am with someone in a crowd I do not get moody though. I don't know why?

1. Alcohol tastes unpleasant in whatever form it takes, beers, spirits, wines, etc

2. put simply it is a poison to the body

3. it causes different effects in different people, while some get happy others go moody. I get violent, verbally and physically.

True if I don't drink too much I don't face any of the symptoms...but it still tastes unpleasant, and if I can get hold of much cheaper, better tasting fruit juices (coconut and pineapple is the best) why bother with alcohol at all?

I wonder, is being averse to drink an otaku trait? What with the whole geeky idea, geeks aren't often considered big drinkers.
