I've never really understood the "closed eyes" look myself. My first experience with it was an anime called 3 x 3 Eyes, and is the only anime I know of where the main character (Yakumo) is drawn like that. The take I got from Yakumo is that he is a person who is rather introverted. But not all characters with closed eyes are introverted, like with the Kitsune example.
I think this whole concept is something that's connected to something in Japanese culture that's never been openly explained through anime but for most Japanese people it derives a passing recollection of what it refers to. Perhaps kind of like how you see some animated characters in US animation with huge chins (best example I could think of off the top of my head). When you think huge chins what do you think of? It's probably something unique for each of us but I think overall it gives the general impression that the character is wealthy, obnoxious and strong willed. |
