I tried using the search function, but it never shows results for me, so I am creating this topic.
Background: I will be formally introducing my best friend to anime when I live with him for the summer vacation, and I have spent some time thinking and discussing with him how to go about this. But, I am curious how others have introduced people to anime and the methods/anime they used. My friend and I agreed to start off with english dub from Cowboy Bebop, GitS, and perhaps another series of a different genre (if the dub seems good to me - perhaps Escaflowne) so that he can appreciate the shows without straining to read the subtitles as they flash by. In the future, if he starts watching more anime, then perhaps he will begin watching subs. My main questions are what methods have you used in the past when introducing friends to anime and also what anime are the best for introduction. I own: -GitS entire series, Cowboy Bebop, X TV, Full Metal Panic Series, Elfen Lied, Escaflowne, NGE, Berserk, Trigun, Infinite Ryvius, Blue Gender, Gungrave, and Gunslinger Girl. The bolded ones (hopefully they are bolded) are the ones I've seen in English and consider decent enough to watch. The others I have only seen subbed. Has anyone seen the dubs of the other series I own, and are they good? Any input and experience is appreciated. Thanks |

There was a guy on another forum I talked briefly with who claimed to hate every anime except for Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, so I just gave him the link to the ANN encyclopedia page for director Shinichiro Watanabe and recommended checking out other anime he had any sort of involvement in. He fell in love with Ergo Proxy and Vision of Escaflowne.
There was another guy on a forum I met who had a South Park avatar who was on an I HAET ANNIME MAYS DURR DURR rampage. I gave him a link to the opening credits sequence for Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, and he said something like "OK GUYS I TAEK IT BACK DOKURO IS GEWD HERES A LINK 2 THEM SONG U WACH IT NAO IT IS SOOOO GUUD!!!" I also recommended Puni Puni Poemy to him. I've currently converted two people into anime fans (or at least made them stop hating it), and my success rate is 100%!

In my opinon the Dubs for X TV, FMP! Escaflowne and Gungrave are good. At least I like them and the English voice don't toss me into the "real world."
I haven't really tried to show anime to my friends (older anime fan here) but I have to my father. The criteria is...Would this series be something he would like as a live action series. Would it get his action juices flowing or tickle his funny bone? You have to base your choices for the person on the person. If your friend is a giant chicken about being scared or blood, you sure as hell don't want to show them something like Elfen Lied. And if romance makes them barf, stay away from Rumbling Hearts, Sailor Moon or Fushigi Yugi. |

I have 29 people nuder my belt. All I did was make them borrow some DVD's and they came back a loving them. Just find what that person normally likes and give him an anime/manga that's like it. Like my friend Matt, he's a sadistic little bastard that hates everything. Until he borrowed Battle Royale (manga), loved it, and then Gantz (anime) he loved it. And after that Blood Royale, but he cuoldn't take a good bondage hentai...

the problem still lies in actually convincing/forcing them to actually watch what you think would suit their tastes.
You could spout off titles that suit their tastes all day long, but if at the end of the day, they refuse to even open up to give it a chance, it's pointless. Arrogant as I may sound, I have a friend who likes anime but his tastes are very very specific. For instance, he liked midori no hibi for the action and comedy, but about half way through, it started touching on the more romantic aspect and he quit watching it because he doesn't like lovey dovey shit as he puts it. I honestly don't and can't respect his tastes for that. I understand people have their preferences, but for someone to absolutely refuse to even attempt without even trying just angers me, so I don't even bother trying to convert. I don't give them anymore reason to disrespect me, and I don't want anymore reason to disrespect their tastes when they reject what i loan them. |

Well, there is always the tried and true method of tying them to a chair, Superglueing their eyes open, feed them Mountain Dew and Red Bull (or other highly caffeinated substances of your choice) and then start playing anime!

Directing people to anime sites usually works for me, then when they find something its off to youtube and after that they either stay with youtube or get fansubs or loose interest. Much easier with Family I must say, hell I got my mom hooked on Death Note pretty easy

My main method of introducing non-fans to anime is to find a title that is a lot like one of their interests. For instance, my best friend came over and remarked at the size of my DVD collection, and I told him we should watch some with me sometime, and he kind of shrugged it off. Knowing he's heavily into cyborgs and futuristics robot stuff, I got him over a few days later to watch GitS, and he was hooked. Suprisingly he asked me to his house to see GitS 2. Sucess!
Now we are watching Elfen Lied and he likes it. By the way, Elfen Lied in English is actually a good watch, I'd suggest it to your friend as an option. Last edited by coffee on Tue Jan 02, 2007 7:29 pm; edited 1 time in total |

First things first - there are some people (like my mother) who will never and do not want to see animation as anything other than a children's medium. In that case, there is probably little you will ever be able to do to convince them.
Others (like my late grandmother) are willing to give it a try. I'm assuming your friend is not being force-fed and it's his decision to give anime a shot. If so, congratulations - you're halfway there. What to do next is quite simple, really. Think about what live action movies and television shows your friend likes and pick out an anime that you think will match his tastes. It's as simple as that, and since he's your best friend you can make a better decision than any of us would. Good luck! |

Hehe....I'd go with something a little bit more safer than Elfen Lied imo; A lot of people I know would be turned off by he massive gore that is the first 20 minutes of episode one
. Something more modern than Cowboy Bebop though, because it does take a little getting used to; I wouldn't recommend a complete newbie to watch it.
If your friend is attracted to the sci fi world WHATSOEVER, than introduce him/her to the FMP world. And that's my 2 cents. |

I'd start with a couple of movies. Can't go wrong with a Miyazaki flick, or the Cowboy Bebop movie, or the 1st GITS film.

I'd personnally also need a tip or two. I did tried to get some of my friend in it but it only worked for one of them and he ain't really a fan, he borrow some of my dvd (only the disc in its protective case, who know what could happen) time to time but he never bother finding a series to watch on his own.
I'd also like to introduce (actually I just want him to stop complaining about my collection) my brother to anime but I am unable to find a series for his taste, he doesn't watch a lot of Tv series or at all (he likes more episodic stuff), he enjoys war movies, (From Joyeux Noël to Saving private Ryan) old horror movie, Charlie Chaplin's movies or any great movie actually and he got a passion for black and death metal. Well, that's all I know about his taste. The only anime he ever completed was Final Fantasy 7 and he watched it only because he's a fan of the series (he disliked the movie). So if anybody could help me too it'll be appreciated.

He might like Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen, those take place during the War. I haven't seen BG but GotF is one of the SADDEST movies I've ever seen. That's my two cents worth...and I will understand completely if someone MASSIVLY shoots down my Suggestions. Oh, and you might try Full Metal Panic as well. |

Thanks for the suggestions LydiaDianne, I'll try to find Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen, It just might be his stuff. But for Full Metal Panic, I don't know, I have a feeling he will not be interested (well, according to the encyclopedia entry).

Thanks to everyone who responded. I will listen to some english from the series you mentioned to see how the dub sounds. It would be great if Gungrave, elfen lied and some others had good dubs, especially Gungrave (amazing story). We have done some compromising to get to this point, and we plan on viewing anime from different genres to see what he likes. Luckily, he liked transformers (the movie) when watching it with his nephew during Xmas, so it sounds like mecha is in. That makes it easy on me.
