It wasn't a random assumption; everything you've said in your previous post pointed towards those two words. If anything I'd call it a deduction. Nevertheless, the point would be that I, for example, would never type anything that'd make anyone assume that I was an anime elitist

Why? because I said people are stupid? It is a simple answer and it's true. I'll say it again. Because people are stupid. Most believe believe something that is not true because they don't want to give a damn. If they are interested then they would check it out themselves before making any STUPID comments about their preconcieved concepts. I'm not trying to be an elitist. Stop forcing yourself to believe that. It doesn't make you anymore righteous, just more naive,

Quote:
And exactly how are people "wanting" to stay ignorant? That's what you claim, yet it's ridiculous as it's common sense that most people who criticize anime base their opinions on their preconceived notions (ie. the first and only anime they ever watched is an episode of Pokemon), which is ignorance on their part. To say that they "want" to remain ignorant assumes that they actually know something about anime, and they "want" to remain ignorant of something that they already know.

Why is it ridiculous? You think people like to prove themselves wrong? people wanting to remain ignorant does not mean they already know about Anime. It means they don't want to prove their blalant comment to be stupid or false. Think about it. It's like me saying this hamburger is crappy after one bite and believing this hamburger shack is crap in general. Why would anyone who believe that care to buy something else even if it was good?

Quote:
To put it in a story, Mr. Ignorant watches one episode of Pokemon, and assumes that all anime is like Pokemon because he's ignorant. He remains ignorant because he doesn't "want" to watch anime. He doesn't know he's ignorant, because he's never watched anything else that makes him realize that he's ignorant. When has he ever "wanted" to remain ignorant?

let me give you a different scenario:

Mr. Ignorant watches one episode of Pokemon and believes all Anime is like Pokemon. So instead of wanting to try out other things, he is convienced that all Anime are for kids. When Otaku A comes and tells Mr. Ignorant so and so Anime is good, he refuses and makes fun of Otaku A because he already believes all Anime is crap and for kids. He rather stay ignorant of what can prove him wrong so nothing anything else says can change what he feels.

No seriously please stop typing and think about it. Why do people even say mean things to people because they watch Anime? If they they are really just ignorant, wouldn't it be common sense to investigate things before just saying random stupid crap? Isn't it stupid and immature to say things like that whether they are ignorant or not?

most people will criticize what they don't understand. believe me, I use to think "My Fair Lady" would be a cheesy movie just because it's a musical but when i DID take the time to watch it i found it to be quite enjoyable. and it let me appreciate Family Guy more Smile

i'm no expert, but i think most people criticize anime because.....well, let's face it.....it's a cartoon. mind you, it's a cartoon in which it has a good storyline depending on what you watch.

just take their criticisms with a grain of salt. no matter what they say, they can't stop you from watching it.

Often people are afraid of what they don't know. In this instance it applies to video games as well, when parents don't know what their children are playing and then assume it to be the work of the devil. And like people have been saying, a lot of people think that anime is porn. I think what really helps them to assume this is when anime is playing on toonami or [AS], because that's late night and you're going to get mostly adult humor or material after midnight.

What's with the vitriolic tone.....take it down a key already. No need to put people's back's up.

As to your Mr. Ignorant, as long as he makes no moves on me he's free to remain ignorant while thinking he's not. Were he to start spouting opinions (read "prejudices") on anime again however, we'd be justified to think him pretty stupid again, since he demonstrably didn't do an awful lot of research. Stupidity is like religion: it sticks, and once there, will brook no argument. No offense.

When I started watching anime my friends made fun of me, I wondered why. I don't even talk about anime so much and the still criticize it. They keep saying that it is wierd and that it has no plot and it is very boring. When I read a manga, without even knowing what it is about or even what it is, they start to think of a lot of things to critcize by looking at the front cover. They don't even give it a chance. Is it because of the mechs (Gundum and Neon Genesis Evangelion), the character transformations (S-Cry-Ed and Sailor Moon), or the odd plots (Excel Saga and Fooly Cooly). Sometimes it leads to racism about the Japanese for no reason at all.

If anybody knows a reason as to why people criticize anime please post your answer.

notice what I bolded. Everything I have responded so far is towards THIS topic. As for "they", the people the topic creator is talking about is the people I am referring to.

The point of the story of Mr. Ignorant is to show the process of how one becomes and remains ignorant. The point was to show that in the process there is no such thing as "wanting" to be ignorant. Nice to see you got the point.

Though you butchered the entire example to say something completely different, I see an interesting fact. In your (and Lord Kefka's) perspective, he's "stupid". That's quite agreeable, since you both could be pretty ignorant that he's ignorant and consider him "stupid" rather than "ignorant". So where does the cycle of ignorance end then? I guess you could carry on like history did until a MLK-like figure fixes you up.

/By the way, the only "tone" I have is that of a teacher (I feel pretty good right now). If anybody should tone down a key, it's Lord Kefka and his stupid, unrealistic story that makes no common sense. Like no, seriously, shut up and think before you type?

Actually you're being pretty stupid and stuck up in your own convictions. And you feel happy and like a teacher? Lol... you are full of it.

Anyone can choose to be ignorant if they wanted to. They don't have to know something to be ignorant of it. Please go look up the definition of what "ignorance". is Until then don't talk. Have a nice day Mr. Teacher.Sir

Screw MTV and screw other people that are ignorant about anime. They're just shows. It's not like the furries with their sick animal porn fetish and.. oops. Went off topic but that's one example of ignorance. People that make fun of other people for what they like are the ones with no life. Since it seems they got nothing better to do than insult something they know nothing about. Y'know anime and rap are very similar: They both are becoming mainstream and both recieve their share of criticism. They both have their share of fans too and are stereotyped often. People say rap is all about "blings" and "hoes" but there's some GOOD rap in there. Same with anime. People say it's all POkemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! but how can you judge based on only two out of a million shows? Maybe all American animation is Family Guy and South Park that doesn't mean it's true.

To each his own.

Another question is, why do anime fans have a persecution complex? If you want to start generalizing there's no sense looking only one way. Not to mention sometimes there's a sense of hypocrisy, look at MetalHeavyMetal and his comments not only here but in the thread about the effect on anime in culture where he criticizes other shows that reflects the tastes of others that don't agree with his own. It's not like anime is the only fandom in the world that gets criticized by those outside of it, same can be said for many fanbases out there. It's also not as though anime fans themselves are innocent of similar behavior towards other fanbases or even amongst groups that exist internally such as fans of dubs.

Could it be stupidity? Sure. Could it be ignorance? Sure. Could it be something else? Most likely. Fact is, like it or not, some people just don't like anime or have no interest in it, while that doesn't mean they should criticize I highly doubt there's a person in this thread who hasn't criticized someone else for something they didn't like or understand at some point. And to be honest, I've encountered many a situation where an anime fan was criticized for anime because they were pushing anime on the other individual in some way, either making them watch some or talking about it constantly when that person has no interest in it.

I think the primary demonstration of ignorance is on the part of the fans in many of these cases. Some people just don't like anime or have no interest in anime, doesn't make them ignorant or stupid, and criticizing someone else just makes them human as it's something we all do, I've even seen it to no small degree on this board so let's not even try to play innocent.

Azathrael wrote:
Thank you for your kind backseat moderation, sir.

Seriously, cut the crap, this is the second thread this morning you've made this comment, which is ironic since this comment itself is just as bad. Maybe if you weren't always creating the need for moderation people wouldn't be making the comments and you wouldn't have to snap back with your little one liner. psycho wasn't moderating, he was expressing a concern that another decent thread might be derailed and locked as a result, which is a valid concern. Your response however was simply pointless and unnecessary.

Besides, by assuming others are ignorant rather than just uninterested, you yourself are only demonstrating your ignorance.

As stated in quite a few ways in above posts, there are numerous reasons for some people to dislike Anime in general.

From my own personal experience people that told me Anime is not a "good" thing to waste my time on I simple asked a question: "Well, what exactly do you know about Anime to tell me that It's not for me?"
I have never received an answer from anyone that will prove or persuade that in anyway It would be negative for me to enjoy Anime in my personal time. It came down to few personalities.
I'm a very new person to Anime world, barely 3-4 months, I agree that my knowledge is extremely low and limited when it comes to Anime number of view, then again, I'm grown-up enough to realise what I like and dislike, or what is good for me and isn't.

I had a pleasure to be confronted with few arguments raging from "Many years fans" who for some reasons don't enjoy watching Anime anymore and they make it their duty to make sure to express them self with poisonous tongue, to simple people that saw maybe one or two movies, or an episodes that they didn't enjoy who also feel that it is essential to let the world know about their dislike.

I'll be honest, I my 24 years I never encountered so much hate from simple limited knowledge, as they say: You can't judge the book only by it's cover.

As it stands right now, from all my friends that don't understand Anime, or even a meaning of the word, unless they show any kind of maturity in their mind I simply don't care about their opinions.
Most daily life is reflected the same way, If people don't understand something they will go ahead and join the "Stupid, arrogant etc" group.

In the end, it comes down to a person. I never knew or understood Anime half a year ago. Work, Education, Fammily, friends and every day life was my routine.

Until my own co-worked gave me a movie to watch over weekend. I'm sure that "Akira" is probably a very old tittle to judge Anime upon, but I had a great time watching it and from that day, It became my Hobby.

Do not care what people say. If you like it-enjoy it. You will be surprised how much easier and happier the life is. You will meet those that share same goals as you do, and even those who don't, but they will enjoy being your friend in daily life and will not criticise you for something you like, It won't matter Smile

I have tried to get them into anime by showing them Noir, Serial Experiments Lain, S-Cry-Ed, and Espicially Hellsing OVA. They still keep saying that I waste my time and that I have no life. I have gotten only one of my friends to stop saying that and that was by using Hellsing. Other than that my friends remain ignorant saying that anime is something people with no lives watch. (it is a bit offensive if you think about it)

Its simple, It's either you like it or you don't or maybe you just don't care and frankly that's about it. Why should we care if they criticize it [anime] or not? Does it really matter? A person has the right to like and dislike whatever it is they want. Don't think that I'm justifying "people who criticize anime" in fact it really depends on the way they criticize it, If another person is harmed physically or mentally by being criticized, due to watching anime then this topic is actually worth while to discuss. If not then it doesn't really matter if your friends like anime or not, why should you care? just do whatever it is that makes you happy.
If you just stay shut and say no comments at all you'd be better off. Just don't react to anything they say about you and/or about things that you do [anime, manga etc.]
All I'm saying is that people that criticize anime can do whatever it is that they want, Sometimes they are NOT ignorant or stupid at all, they’re just not interested. Although at times, YES they are ignorant or stupid if you put it this way:
Lord Kefta wrote:
Do you know WHY some people make fun of Anime and stay ignorant? it's common sense at it's best: people choose to stay ignorant once they make fun of the first Anime they see because they want their original statement to remain true to them. Once they realize that good Anime DO exist, they would feel like an idiot for ever saying what they did. it's called ego that people have.

Yes, this is true indeed. If you put it this way, SOME people DO CHOOSE to stay IGNORANT , beacause they've probably criticized anime in such ways, that it would make them look like an idiot if they open themselves up to anime, AND ACTUALLY LIKE IT. They'd look stupid, so they choose not to give anime a chance because they know they MIGHT like it.

This is a completely different scenario, in which this wasn't even supposed to be compared to what Lord Kefta said. This doesn't make sense. If you put it this way ,yes Mr.ignorant DIDN'T CHOOSE to be ignorant. The thing is you didn't even pay attention to what it is that Lord Kefta said, His/her example is wayyy different from yours. You didn't even pay attention to what he/she was saying. To me, Lord Kefta didn't say anything that made him/her seem like an "anime elitist", To be honest, you're the one who's making yourself seem like this "anime elitist" that you speak of. You jumped into conclusions without even analyzing what point Lord Kefta was trying to prove.
Don't get me wrong both of you guys [Azathrael & Lord Kefta] are correct in your own ways, but your examples just don't match up.So your arguement with each other is pointless,You're both right and both of you guys have proven your points.

Anyways,Who cares if other people like anime or not? All that matters is if YOU like it.
If you like it then continue liking it, why should I care why it is they criticize it or not? They could criticize anime all they want, for all i care I'm still going to like anime even if I'm the only1. It's called having your own perspective about things, do what you want!! .[all that i've said was a mere opinon about this topic]
hopefully no1 attacks me *scared* Wink hahaha
