I recently got my hands on the entire series of Blue Gender. I thought it was an excellent anime, with a great story and plenty of violence and gore. However, the set I bought came with a movie called, The Warrior. I was expecting some kind of sequal, side story or spin off. After watching the first ten minutes, I realized the movie was the exact same as the anime. The only big difference was that Yuji had long hair (which looked stupid).

What is the point of the movie? Is it actually worth watching?

It's like the movies for Gundam SEED, it's the same story, only condensed and not as good (referring to Blue Gender here, haven't even watched the SEED ones). For me at least, the best part of Blue Gender was watching it with my friend on the big screen shouting "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?!" for the first 10 episodes as we were attempting to fill in the story before they told us, suffice to say, we weren't doing a great job. Either way, I didn't think the movie was anywhere near as interesting either.

The Warrior is definitely condensed and less interesting than the series, but actually the story ends quite differently in the movie. I didn't really like it. The series however, was fantastic.

I love the series and was just thinking about it yesterday. Why is this series ranked:

Arithmetic mean: 6.2565 (Decent+.25), std. dev.: 2.128, rank: #1949
Weighted mean: 6.1478 (Decent+.14), rank: #2002
Bayesian estimate: 6.17347 (Decent+.17), rank: #1548

That's over 2000 shows people liked better for weighted mean. There are a bunch of really awful shows that rank at 6.0 - 7.0. People have listed this series under their worst five on the sticky. The main reason I've seen were that the violence and sex was a bit much, which I understand. The other reason why I see people pan the series is for it's pacing, although I love Takahashi's pacing in Blue Gender, Votoms, and Gasaraki. I believe he is the best producer/director for real robot series, and I look forward to watching Flag. The movie actually rated lower on this site than the tv series, but that is no surprise since movies crunched from tv series tend to fair poorly.

I didn't enjoy the movie as much as I liked the TV series either. The movie consists of clips taken from the TV series, reworked with some new animation, has more emphasis on action, & a tweaked storyline that gets rid of most of the supporting cast & simplifies the back story. It's not bad as an alternative story, but it lacks the character depth that made me interested in the TV series in the first place.

Oh, one thing that did bug me (pardon the pun) about the movie is that the sub track was either out of sync, missing, or just translated really badly. I didn't notice anything as bad in the TV series, so it kinda hacks me off that Funimation would let the movie version out with all the errors.

This series was on [as] four or five years ago, iirc, when they had to edit everything like they do for Naruto today, which meant a lot of edits, so I have wondered if the low ratings were related to that.
Also, the series' overarching message of man as the disease, which is common in Japanese shows, probably wasn't too popular here.

Blue Gender aired in 2003, which was only three years ago.

Also, Naruto has barely any edits. And it aired on Toonami, not Adult Swim, so its editing is totally unrelated to BG's.

[OT] - I have seen the series and thought the ending was quite good and closed the series nicely. How does the ending in the movie differ from the series.
