I clicked to report a post and a little box popped up asking me to describe why I wanted to report tit, I was just going to ask if it was obligatory to fill this is? And if so, what with?

Can we report posts that take the thread way off topic? Especially posts that change every thread into the same repeated arguement?? It seems sad that a few bad subjects ruin some good threads. I've been guilty of it myself, I won't deny it.
I know it's cranky, but I am rather tired of reading a few of the debates, when they may not even be on the topic of the subject. But, I didn't see anything specifically about that in the rules (though I may have just missed it), and I don't want to waste the mods' time looking through report posts that aren't in violation of anything.
Thanks for your time.

I would also like clarification on this point. I admit, I already reported one such post today, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure that I was completely within my rights to do so. I can only imagine how much time the mods have to spend going through reports plus all the PMs they probably get, so I don't want to add to the workload unless it's appropriate to do so.
It is frustrating to see otherwise interesting discussions or even just topics that could be good but never get the chance end up being diverted into someone's one track crusade to pound us with the same argument on the same subject over and over.
@bluepita -- I don't know if it's specifically what triggered your question, but I liked the potential of your "Does anime have a style" topic and was bummed to see it blatantly hijacked.

I know in the past Tony K. has asked people not to report minor things like backseat moderating, because every time you report something it sends him a message and he has to go and sort it out. So I'm not sure if they'd appreciate it if every time someone felt a topic was getting a bit off topic they got spammed with more reports.
Do you want the mods to lock the thread as soon as they go off topic or to warn them to go back on topic?

ManofRust Well, my thread was the last in a long line of threads that has been hijacked by the same debate. I guess you could say it was the straw that borke the camel's back. Lol, the very cranky camel's back to be more specific.
unhealthyman Well, I don't really have an issue every time something goes a little off topic. Some of that leads to very interesting discussions. What I find annoying is when a perfectly good thread (or a dozen perfectly good topics) turn into yet another sub/dub, definition of anime, 4Kids sucks, etc. debate. Lol, I'll admit I've gotten sucked in myself once or twice. Hell, I'll report my own posts to be fair.
I don't want to clog up the mods report board with reports that are a waste of their time. However, if it's legitimate, I'll love to report some of those long debated tangents.

As I understand the email thing is no longer applicable as I read somewhere that reports are now handled through the forums in a central location.

Yes, please report a post if it takes a thread excessively off-topic.

If you think the reason for your reporting post is 100% evident, there's no need to fill out the forum.
However if you think there's any chance a moderator might not immediately realise why you are reporting a post, you should definitely explain why you are reporting it.
Keep in mind that moderators may only look at the post in question as opposed to the thread leading up to it.
