Why is it that the encyclopedia entries for Ikki-Tosen differ between the manga and anime? The anime is Ikki-Tosen and manga is Battle Vixens with Ikki-Tosen as the alternative title. WOuldn't it make sense to have them as one title like most other anime/manga series do?

It's because the official North American titles for the anime and manga are different, much like Kare Kano/His And Her Circumstances.

Like one3rd said, its based on how they are released in the U.S. If they don't have a U.S. release, I would imagine they would be based either on some sort of official translation or the most popular one.

Another example of a situation like this would be Kodocha (anime) and Kodomo no Omocha (manga).

The official English title for the Kodocha manga is "Kodocha: Sana's Stage".

Was it? It's been a while since I read them. I could have sworn it used Kodomo no Omocha. Oh well.

The first volume of Kodocha was originally released in English split into 5 comics, I only have the first one but there was a comment at the back on the name which I typed up some while back and which managed to survive my HD crash:

Quote:
"What does that name mean?" Well, here's the deal. The original Japanese series is called Kodomo no Omocha, which translatees as "Child's Toy". Neither of these really works here since (a) no-one would understand the Japanese name, and (b) to the English-speaking reader, "Child's Toy" doesn't really seem like an appropriate name. "Kodocha" is what fans here and in Japan call the series ("Kodo" from kodomo, "cha" from omocha) but that didn't seem to work just by itself. Everyone tried to think of a good subtitle foe the series, and miss Obana's favourite was "Sana's Stage".
