I recently heard a rumor that they are trying to turn Akira into a live action movie. Is there any truth behind this claim? That and I also have heard that everything has come together for the Neon Genesis Evangelion live action movie and they are close to finishing the pre-production phase.
I am just curious if any one has been keeping up on stuff like that?

According to ADV w/ the NGE movie (it's on google video somewhere, I found a link from the wikipedia site for NGE to it) they have 3 A-list directors who wanna do it, the screen-play is being written by some very well known science fiction writers, and we'd be suprised at what actors want in on this project. It's also going to a trilogy so they can cover the entire story, they plan on having cameos of the voice actors (both English and Japanese, for example, the lady who did Asuka in the US version is beggin them to let her be Asuka's mom in the movie), they are casting the main characters (the kids) first and then going from there to find people who work with them, and they plan on giving it the same justice that the LotR movies gave the books (that a good or bad thing? good in my opinion, the LotR movies captured the books just as I had pictured them, however this is a pretty opinion based question.

Have they hinted to when they might start shooting the film or when the expected release date might be?

I've heard they'll start working on the NGE movie once Halo's done. Currently, WETA is tied up with that movie and can't start on NGE until that one's finished.

At least, my friend who's an NGE fanboy keeps saying "I wish Halo would just come out!"

Supposely it's due out next March, as some people believe that the movie will lead into the new Halo game that due out that summer.

oh yea, sorry, forgot to mention that, they are busy with Halo at the moment, NGE is after Halo.

I keep telling my real life friends who know nothing about EVA, my guild mates who are big readers and love connotation as much as me, and am celebrating with my friends who got me into Anime about these movies. I've got a lot of faith in Weta.

Warner optioned the live-action rights to Akira years ago, but that project has effectively been dead for at least half a decade.

As for the Live-Action Evangelion Movie (affectionately referred to by many as LAEM), it's a project some people would like to make, but I doubt it will ever amount to anything other than optimistic conjecture without the backing of a major studio. (And WETA, which is a special effects house not a studio in and of itself, is working on many different projects, not just Halo.)

considering the amount of intrests by actors and A-list directors and the fact Weta is working w/ it I'm pretty sure some studio would pick it up. We can only wait and see cause we don't know anything until they pick the director

They just said that since the anime takes place in that year. Trust me, this movie will never see the light of day. It's been in development hell for three years now.

once again, according to ADV it got backed up because of King Kong. Everything Weta was working on got put on haul for it, since it's Peter Jackson's "pet".

I do hope that they will eventually release it. Waiting patiently is not something that I particularly like to do, espcially if it doesn't come till 2015. Confused

Well, ADV has been spinning variations of the same claims about A-list directors and actors and a big announcement about LAEM being just "around the corner" since at least the autumn of 2004, and so far... bupkis in terms of actual soild news beyond "we are this close to making an announcement at some point within the next half-year".

"Interest" can mean a lot of things, and until I hear these supposed big names being named, with actual "attachment" to the project rather than mere non-committal "interest", I'll see it as just press release "buzz" used to attract the massive amount of investment they'd need to pull off a project of this magnitude without being greenlit by a major studio.
