Mmm...Glassjaw.

I will recommend an anime or manga to someone if I think they'll like it. Whether they take the advice is another thing, and I don't care, but I think if they would like it, I don't see a problem in recommending it. Taking that recommendation and tacking on something else just because it's anime is something else entirely...

I also love The Castle of Cagliostro. It's not really typical Lupin, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most exciting films I've ever seen.

As a side note, I liked the "1 minute 64 second typo."

If you're the type of person who normally likes to joke around about your interests, I think that situation in the Shelf Life could work, but if you're the type of person who takes your hobby more seriously it wouldn't work all that well because it'd be too out of character for you. And admitting that you watch hentai anime isn't always the best solution to that kind of situation either depending on where you live and what kind of person you're dealing with. I live in the south where homophobic "pornography is evil!" religious fanatics are the majority and fellow open minded pornography fans are in the minority. If I admitted that I liked hentai anime around here, most people would think I was a sick pervert, especially if I reveal that I watch yaoi. I think in this situation where somebody is making fun of you for liking anime, the best solution is to just ignore them. Somebody who makes fun of you just because you like something they don't is a retard who you shouldn't bother trying to make them understand because it would all be a waste of time, anyway. If you try to introduce anime to somebody, try to introduce it to somebody who already likes cartoons. If you're trying to convert somebody who hates cartoons expect for sitcoms like The Simpsons or South Park, you're going to have a much harder time trying to convince them that anime can be watched by adults, too. But if you try to introduce anime to somebody who's already a big cartoon fan, you're probably going to have a greater chance of getting them to watch it instead because they'll already be open to the idea of watching animation.

I don't know anyone who would openly admit to watching hentai, especially to a stranger. That having been said, I don't think Bamboo is seriously suggesting that people admit that they watch hentai.

I agree that the scenarios she posed could only work if your personality was prone to joking, but I also think that a lot of readers didn't realize that she was joking.

Like, shadow_Hiei: I'm almost 200% sure that she wasn't admitting she liked Pokemon, or encouraging people to say that they did. I think her whole point was to take whatever the other person said, take that stereotype and throw it back at them. It's all about taking things in stride, and not getting upset if the other person says something mean about your hobby. Because, you know, it *is* possible to be friends with people who don't like anime.

How different are we talking here? Are the differences the sames as the Director version of Samurai (Trust & Betrayal) and the regular release?

Speaking of which, I've been wondering this for a while. What is the difference between the regular and the Director's cut edition of Samurai X?

Main difference is that the episodes are mixed together to make a movie, so that means no music for the first credit. Which is a shame because the music really is amazing here in this OVA.

I think there is more cut out of the Director's cut then put back in. The originals have more scenes.

Was that the only difference? Pretty stupid reason to not pick it up if that was.

Imagine if the openings for Nausicaa and Laputa were reduced to a series of stills. Anyway, I'm keeping the old disc. If I had known the Streamline dvd was the only way to see Mamo uncut, I would have bought that too.

I will cut Geneon and TMS more slack, only because if they didn't, DC (a subsidiary of Time-Warner) would have sued them down to parade rest (for starters) for having unlicensed representations of their comic book characters in the movie (I'm assuming that's the at least one of the edits you're talking about). This...this was just senseless violence done to that sequence, and I don't buy completely the excuse mentioned here that TMS called the shots on the opening. If they did, it's inexcusable, and perhaps someone should let Miyazaki-sensei know what they did to it so he can take care of things. The reason that all the Disney/Tokuma films are 100% unedited is because he demanded they not be edited ouside of dubbing -- when you're the Kurosawa or Bergman of anime, you have that kind of pull.
Otherwise, if it shakes out that Manga was the culprit in this, that's the absolute last Manga DVD I buy. We don't have to put up with this in this day and age.

Miyazaki might care but there's really nothing he can do, unless he wants to try and pull an "Alan Smithee" type of schtickt which won't work.

Technically, it's a parody, so it falls under fair use, but no one
wants to go through the litigation.

Then you don't know TMS.

If Ghibli owned the film, then Miyazaki could do something about it, but he was just a hired director on CoC.

I saw My Secret Cache when it was on free-to-air TV here several years ago... it was quite funny, in a slightly sad way. You gotta feel for the husband, putting up with her crap Laughing

I don't know if the male lead character was the Sakiko character's husband but it doesn't really matter. I picked up the R2 DVD on a lark...Well, it does have English subtitles and there was quip on the back of the case reminding buyers that it was directed by Yaguchi Shinobu of "Waterboys" fame. I quite enjoyed the movie and all the zany escapades the main character goes through in her search for that suitcase full of money. Well, this makes it two for the count this week of Japanese movies that I didn't expect to see R1 releases of, the other one being "Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san".

Having a box is always nice, but I just bought the individual DVDs for a total of $27 at rightstuf, where they were selling the thinpack for $41. Gotta take those savings, especially when one can get the extras for a lower price.

Are you sure? Are you speaking from experience or basing this on what someone else said? If its the latter, its possible they meant something else. The Director's Cut versions were made into "widescreen" versions by lopping off the top and bottom of the video footage. Meaning that every scene was missing about 10-20% of the video.

You could be right, though, and some scenes were actually removed, but that would be the first I've heard of it. As far as I know, the only things that were completely removed were the opening and endings to merge the episodes into a single movie (like what Manga did to Karas recently).
