"Hmm, this potential series seems to have this number of guys and girls in the main cast. I'll check it out!"

I think it safe to say that nowadays, a lot of fans including me are guilty of pulling that "checklist criteria" in determining which shows to try out or research more (you know who you are, you certain type of user who only respond to certain type of threads in the Talkback subforum! Twisted Evil ). And if the story ended up being outright solid, great we have maximized our enjoyment. Then there's having a balanced cast which is probably the best of both worlds.

Obviously they don't determine whether the show is good or not though in my case, I get some visceral charge of a cast full of mostly females on a series where its genre are usually male-dominated. For example, there's no doubt that I'm enjoying this season of Railgun. But during that mini sub arc where Mikoto faces off the members of ITEM, I felt so pumped because this felt like watching those shounen action shows where one guy tries to outwit his opponent and has to make his attacks count only this time the girls are in that position. Or another example, Heartcatch Precure which featured the most stylized fight sequences ever to be bestowed upon a magical girl show even for Pretty Cure standards.

So what are your thoughts in the matter?

Character gender ratio has never really factored into my decisions on whether or not to watch a show. For me, the real deciding factor is whether or not I think I will like the character's personalities. If the characters are primarily cheerful, motivated, quirky, energetic or caring, then I'm interested. If they're morose, detached, sadistic, or whiny, I typically can't stay interested.

I generally avoid sausage fest shows since they tend to play up the yaoi-lust aspect for the girls, like Hunter x Hunter. I do like a mix of girls in the cast usually. I'd rather watch shounen like Fairy Tail, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal, Detective Conan, and One Piece which has a nice mix of genders since they tend to be written more neutral and the fanservice is more diverse.

Hadn't really thought about it, but I'm more likely to enjoy a show if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • Main protagonist is a guy.
  • 2 guys as main protagonists.
  • Guy and girl as main protagonists.

After that point, I don't like the secondary characters to all be the same gender as the first (e.g. I don't like a show with 6 guys; you can feel the yaoi from here!).

I don't have a thing against female protagonists, but I typically just don't like the shows. Quick example being the flowers of Lagann or whatever it's called.

Myself, I have more of an anti-checklist or a checklist of red flags that tell me not to waste my time.
[ ] Male lead and 3+ prominent female characters or 5+ less prominent female characters
[ ] All male or all female cast with 4+ prominent characters
[ ] Female character's breasts are larger than head and/or are the primary focus of promotional material
[ ] Described as a "romantic comedy"
[ ] Based on 4 panel manga
[ ] Idols, maids, shrine maidens, lolis, incest, any other obvious fetish material
[ ] Falls under the "cute girls do activity/hobby" sub-genre

Obviously these are not universal rules. I'm sure I could think of counter examples to at least some of them. But they're usually pretty solid indicators. And if something does succeed in totally going against my expectations I'm probably gonna hear about it and can always circle back later.

I was too lazy to post an anti-checklist, since it was more effort, but mine would be quite similar to ikillchicken.

Free! is an excellent example: a lot of guys, all guys, activity/hobby.

An all-female cast or with females outnumbering the males as much as possible. And the more cast with big boobs the better.

I never really gave it too much thought when deciding what to watch, I'm normally far more focused on the plot premise of the series. Although, I have to say I normally am partial to having a more balanced main cast, I'm not really into harem themed anime, but that could be directly effected by the ratios, either male or female. I don't mind when the cast is really filled with a certain gender, unless it gets yaoi/yuri-ish. Other than that, it really is kind of a bonus thing to look at when finding an anime. Very Happy

Character gender has little, if anything, to do with my selection process. Confused

I usually go by whether or not the plot or trailer looks interesting or is a genre I enjoy. As a rule I also will give anything animated by Madhouse or with music composed by Yuki Kaijura a shot.

Well, generally I like series with a equal or near-equal ratio of girls to guys in them, since that often means the show won't be just fanservice. But I'm also plenty likely to watch a all-male or all-female show if it catches my interest so I never actually make a point out of a show needing a certain ratio of guys to girls for me to consider watching it. I just lower my expectations a little if I know going into a show that it's going to be a harem show or a slice-of-life with an all male/female cast.

I dunno. I'm not really partial to one gender or another if it' done well. Though I wil say that I tend to find smug females VASTLY more annoying than smug men. Not sure what that's all about.

I prefer either a balance or at least close to it. Azumanga Daioh, Puella, and Cromartie High are the only one gender anime I enjoyed. I am always hesitant about trying others because I feel like they will just be fanservice bishie or moeblob stuff. I dont mind if other people like that stuff but its not for me.

I have thought about this, I remember back with Angel Beats I was a bit excited that Key did a story that had a large number of males and females, it was one of the good parts out of it. Sadly a certain other Key anime did not work out despite also being more even than most of their works.

Put it this way -- gender ratios have never stopped me from watching a show. I simply watch whatever I think might be interesting and sometimes that might be as little as a character's hairstyle or a name that catches my eye. But do find an all female cast to be a bit of a turn-off, as my experience has shown such programmes often turn immediately into moe-blob mush. On the flip side, I like shows with a female as the main protagonist, and I gravitate to shows featuring them. But my opinions on such is rather shallow, as I've watched every kind of gender imbalance imaginable, from sausage-fest BL to reverse harems to harems to all-girl-moeblob to all-girl-school-yuri to whatever the hell Simoun was.

Or to put it another way -- Checklists? Ain't nobody got time for that, not with all the anime I have to get watching.

I honestly don't think gender quotas has too much to do with picking anime to watch. Most of the shows I watch have a female protagonist but that's also because most of them are shojo and most shojo series have female protagonists, imagine that. But there's a lot of mostly-female casts that are just about teh fan service, which I don't care for. I do watch a good mix though, overall.

Interestingly enough, outside of anime a mostly-female cast would, in fact, be a big selling point for me. But that's because it usually doesn't happen, whereas in anime I can actually think of a decent list of series.
