I guess I don't care how many companies of companies there are, as long as every time I walk into my comic store there is going to be a new yaoi/BL/whathaveyou on the shelf. 15 bucks is kind of a kick in the pants, though. But I suppose it is pretty spendy to secure a license.

True, but since BL is a niche audience, it doesn't sell a lot, hence the higher price, to make up for lisencing fees. Though I'd rather pay $15 to get a professional comic than read badly drawn doujinshi* and pictureless fanfic. *thoug hthere are some really good doujinshi out there! |

Yea, we desperately need a yuri company to "counterbalance" this! |

This isn't always the case, since both BLU and Kitty Media (Media Blasters) are able to sell most of their BL titles for $10, the average price for manga in the US. DMP and DramaQueen do charge above the average price ($12-$13), but they make up for it by featuring a larger format (DMP), color pages (DQ), and nice dust jackets (both companies). If they're able to sell BL manga at average price or include extras for only a couple bucks more, these companies must be selling decently enough. The only company I can recall that sells expensive BL manga with no extras is CPM's Be Beautiful line. $16 for their manga with no special extras (at least in the ones I've read) is a rip-off compared to the other US companies, which is one of the reasons I don't buy many of CPM's BL titles. |

SECONDED! I must say I don't get why Yuri would be any less popular than Yaoi personally as every red bloded straigh male american would agree that lesbian tendencies are hot. And the stories are often quite good when they don't sink too far into shouyo style melodrama. |

That's what I figured. The real reason I've read a fair number of yuri titles is because one of the few scanslators who seems willing to release josei titles happen to be yuri specific; if a company were to try to release yuri on a widespread level, they'd probobly go for ones that are in line with most of the shojo in America. Ever since Tokyopop failed to sell Moyoko Anno and Erika Sakurazawa no one but Ponent Mon has really touched women's manga (and they release what, four books a year?), so my dream of actually getting to read Kyoko Okazaki in english will never happen... But I'm sure there will continue to be a steady stream of yaoi coming into America, not to mention OEL titles from American creators like a certain someone on this board (wink wink). The reality is that it's tough to break into the market dominated by companies like Viz and Del Rey which are able to score big name titles thanks to their parent companies. Even if it isn't yaoi, big publishers like Tokyopop (OEL) and Darkhorse (classic and horror manga) seem to be putting efforts into appealing to specialty genres; yaoi is just the largest in the market. |

Well I live within driving distance of Texas so I know not everyone in Texas is a "fundie" . However, Austin is just one city in a state slightly larger than the country of France. The state as a whole is not known for being liberal and as the second largest state in population what Texas thinks as a whole matters. Which is why I used it instead of another state (actually, you could make the same case for parts of California because contrary to what many think that state is about as conservitive as Texas, mattering on where you are at (I have family living out there is how I found this out)). Personally, I don't care how many imprints manga companies decided to start as long as they don't over saturate the market (which may be what you're worried about). I also do not want to see a repeat of whatever exactly happened with ADV Films manga arm because that's still causing problems on the anime side of things from the looks of things. As for using the BL term - well that may be the correct term but it isn't going to fly with U.S. buyers due to some past history of a similiar word being used in the promotion of illigal activities [I think we can thank spoiler[the Ma n B oy Love group ] for that situation. I actually heard them back in the news last week, after not hearing much of anything through the 1990s, and they are still trying to legalize peodiophilia after all these years :barf: (btw, I put that under spoiler space to try and keep anyone from wandering in from a google search - I don't think the disucssion needs to get hijacked on accident ).] |

And that's why yuri is usually not popular with males. Apparently they expect hot girl-on-girl action but since yuri is female-targeted, it rarely fits male tastes. Most guys tell me they don't like yuri because it has "too much whining and too little fanservice." (I guess Marimite is an exception, though I think it owes much of its popularity to Sei...) |

Yuri is for women by women. >_> What there is of it anyway. It was always my understanding, even from the most connected of Yuri fans, that 'yuri' is in fact, not even 'a market' in Japan. There aren't mass imprints and anthologies devoted to it and so it doesn't have the large fanbase stateside to support an entire company allocating monies to imprint formation and licenses. Keep an eye on Seven Seas though. They've been leaning more toward titles with strong shoujo-ai elements and aren't afraid to license them. As for BL being popular...it is considered niche in Japan. No it's not some massive market in Japan [matter of fact, only recently has it gotten any media attention in Japan at all] so BL itself isn't mainstream, just popular. In terms of pricing, that's just logic. It's the same porn analogy I used at the DMP forum...sure, the porn industry stateside makes more money on DVD's than most Hollywood films--but it's not, nor will ever be, mainstream enough to be carried in rental shops, Wal-Marts, or Best-Buy. So Jenna's Hootie Adventure is going to cost about $20 more than Nacho Libre even though they're both 90 minute DVD's with the same production values. ^^ BL can't even get on to the shelves at most Barnes and Noble bookstores, even if they wrap in a condom and stick in the Gay area. |

I think one of the reasons for this is because of the immense success of yaoi in America. Have you guys seen the Graphic Novels Ranking for June 2006? You can see the top 100 ranking here.
http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/8985.html Yaoi is really getting popular in American. Just look at the chart, there are 6 yaoi manga on the top 100. Not to mention most of the books on the ranking are American comics. YELLOW VOL 4 is at 43 with 1,928 copies sold. (The fifith best selling manga of the month) JAZZ VOL 2 is at 63 with 1,592 copies sold. OUR KINGDOM VOL 3 is at 64 with 1,561 copies sold. LA ESPERANCA VOL 3 is at 66 with 1,531 copies sold. CLAN O/NAKAGAMIS is at 70 with 1,462 copies sold. LOVE MODE VOL 3 is at 97 with 1,087 copies sold. That's 6 out of 19 manga on the ranking. And all of those are from DIG except for LOVE MODE, which is released under BLU(tokyopop) And of course, LOVELESS is currently the best selling BL manga this year. It debuted last month with 2,681 copies at 31. It was the best selling manga by TOKYOPOP in May. |
