...the second film? I enjoyed the first film but the second one was so overwhelming horrible that I had to force myself to finish it. It was like the writer was just reading quotes from random philosophy books to make him seem smart (ie: The Matrix Trilogy).

Anyway, I've heard nothing but high praise for the series and I'm thinking of trying it out, that is, as long as it's not as ridiculously horrible and pretentious as the second film.

I like SAC, its a pretty good anime. But i like SAC more then 2ND GIG. The major just seems like she is completly serious and doesn't joke at all in 2nd GIG. Maybe its just me. By the way i never saw either movies but im watching the 1st one tommorow. Theyre probably alike. Just watch GITS SAC on Adult Swim if you have it.

Both Stand Alone Complex seasons were made before the 2nd film (Innocence) and both seasons IMHO are fantastic shows. It seemed like Innocence was mostly for eye-candy and like you said, seemed awfully pretentious. If you enjoyed the "thought-provoking" parts of the original GitS movie then you'll most certainly enjoy the tv anime.

I do mostly agree with you about GitS:Innocence, nothing annoys me more than clever sentences there for the sake of being clever. I enjoy the philosophical aspects of anime, (i'm a philosophy undergraduate for chrissakes!!!) but I object when I have it forced down my throat.

However, when I first watched Innocence I was also a bit drunk and with some friends who talked through some sections of it, so I've decided that I might give it another crack of the whip some time as my friend still insists that it is really great.

And I'm afraid I can't yet comment on SaC, although from what I've heard it is a collection of kind of short stories with an underlying arc going through it and apparently its pretty good. I don't know how it compares to the bullsh*t factor of Innocence though.

Pretentious well what anime with serious content isn't?. Any way no the Tv show is not really like the movies exept that they have the same world and characters. I liked the Tv series alot. I think if you liked the 1st movie there is a good chance you will like the Tv series you will know right away is my guess so buy or rent the first volume and give it a try. GITS second gig is better than GITS imo but I would not recomend skipping the first season. also the LE's have DTS disk as well as the reg dolby disk so in essence you have a spare disk that is if you have a stero that plays DTS.

The series are definitely less jam-packed with philosophical musings as the movies, instead with more action. I think you'll like them if you like the first movie.

In comparing the two seasons, the second one is more thorough in the plot execution with less "side-stories" than the first; and I think the major looks better in the second--less like a skimpy-dressed future girl (though one could argue that that's the authentic her) and more like a professional elite personnel. But that's just me. However, I like the first season's Laughing Man plot than the second's Refugees; the reason being that the sadly clear and generic villain in the second plot ruins what could've been an even more powerful struggle than the first. It's even more realistic, more complex, more modern world-like, than the first, until the villain comes in, adding an annoying generic conspiracy angle. Both are, nonetheless, spectacular.

could not agree with you more. Her outfit in the first season always bugged me, especially since all the other characters were wearing casual police-detective-wear and then WHAM, thong. I get annoyed by pointless fan service in animes that are as serious as this one.

I thought the plot for the 2nd GIG was way too complex and ultimately unrewarding. Now, the Laughing Man plot in season 1 is where it's at.

And by the way, some of us like pretentious stories. The other day I was all like, "You should totally watch this, it's so pretentious, it's awesome."

I've watched both movies and both seasons of the TV show. Loved all of them except "Innocence".

The first movie was what pulled me into the TV shows. After watching the TV series the movie now seems rushed to me. I liked the pacing of the series better.

Have to admit I'm not sure I actually understand what a Stand Alone Complex really is even now. spoiler[A series of copies with no original?] The philosophy in both series can get confusing and since I almost always watch anime subbed there was much pausing of the DVD.

Wish I had a cyberbrain like all the people in that universe. That way I could sound smart like them during normal conversations; having your brain hooked strait into google would do wonders for your vocabulary of course every other search would turn up porn, so it's win-win. Laughing

EDIT: hah! Need that cyberbrain for spelling mistakes too!

I love all the movies and I have only seen some of the series. I want to wait for a big boxed set to come out for each season. I know Innocence had an annoying poetic attempt of story telling style (i guess), but I still loved the music/animation. =) I cant wait to see the whole series.

I really don't like Ghost in the Shell. Saw the first movie and something like the first 5 SAC episodes. Maybe the 2nd movie, I don't remember.

I don't even care enough to remember. I found GiTS horrible, because the characters are ROBOTS and act like ROBOTS. It's as if they had no feelings. Everyone is always cold, there's no relationship between them. They don't really have morals. It's just something like a futuristic detective story with some mech shootout. not really for me. Maybe the animation is nice, but that'S all there is IMHO. Maybe I'll try again in a year or so.

That is because you seem incapable of noticing the subtleties of many anime. They are most definitely human cyborgs... NOT robots, there IS a big difference. They don't cry and don't let themselves get emotional most of the time, but there's a big difference between not showing your emotions, and not having any at all. GiTS is by no means in my top 10, but it is definitely one of the best executed shows out there.

I don't even wanna know where you pulled that line out of. You what? My best friend and I don't know it or summat? I think I'm allowed to like and dislike what I want, kthxmuch.

GiTS really was vague and ethereal, none of it seemed to have any sense, and the characters which are CYBORGS for your pleasure (I already know that, tyvm), don't act like anything remotely human.

Blah blah blah don't let their emotions show. I don't look for a shoujo in GitS, but it just seemed like a superficial show to me. I don't care about a cyborg definition pulled out of your Star Trek days, if they don't show their emotions, they might as well not have them for the audience. I don't know about you, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to watch an anime with everyone being Brandon Heat/beyond the grave

Maybe I should have watched more. The movie was all right, but really nothing special. It's somewhat entertaining but lacks so much IMHO.

Hmmm... I saw the whole first season of GITS and found there to be a lot of emotion and feelings between the characters. Perhaps you haven't seen enough episodes? GITS is in a way very much like Cowboy Bebop, where the actual main plot is shown only in a few episodes, and most are just stand alone episodes. However, if you do happen to watch it completely, I don't think you can say that there aren't any emotions or morals or feelings. In fact, even the Tachikomas develop feelings.
