Tonally, I just don't think this is gonna work in the same way as Miyazaki's film.

I don't think it's supposed to. Miyazaki's adaptation was fairly loose in its tone and portrayal of the original novel, opting for a more whimsical atmosphere. This live-action film is supposed to be more faithful to the book.

Also, please, somebody tell me I'm not the only one who thinks Kiki's actress looks kinda hot in that outfit. <_<

You're not the only one, though I feel about the same way I do about Rukia and other such girls.

Nope. That's a robe with a dress over it. They're hiding it from us!

Not sure how I feel about this yet. Is the source material (which I assume they're basing this film off) vastly different from Miyazaki's film? Obviously, they're not going for a coming of age story this time, considering a sixteen year old is the lead. Is this a romance, a comedy, an adventure? I feel like I failed to read an announcement somewhere....

Don't blame me, blame Eiko Kadono. It's what Kiki says to Jiji on trying on her new black dress.

The live-action is adapting the 2nd book and onwards. Miyazaki's film loosely adapted the 1st book.
There is romance, comedy, and adventure. At the end of the first book Kiki reflects on how she'll continue her witch training and one day do the same for her daughter side-handedly saying that Tombo would be the father. So it sets it up nicely for romance to develop since both parties are interested.
