The more popular this becomes on the surface, the grander the reason it should be put up for popular vote becomes.

Who cares about these associations and their biases, honestly. How about we go to the average "Yamada" walking down the street and ask them how they feel about it?

If I understand this correctly, in the worst of cases artists will be subjected to be fined and jailed for portraying underage characters in sexual situations in anime, manga and other media.

Personally, I will not be upset if we see less 15 years old characters in anime/manga. I rather see older characters in the media I consume. I will be especially glad to not see stuff like Strike Witches, which mostly exists to provide mastusbation material to otakus.

honestly everybody has their own preferences, especially lolicons. not that i condone them lusting for little girls, i think Loli hentai and the such should be kept so itll at least keep those kinds of people at bay. Take away the porn, and they might just go for the source instead, with all that built up stress.

Either you are ignorant or just being an open ass about something you don't like, either way this was discussed in length in the anouncement thread and the consensus was that if the bill goes as is it would be the eventual death of the anime industry as we know it and it wouldn't be replaced with "older characters" that you are so hopeing for.

If the same criteria are applied to anime and manga as to images of real children such shows as Ranma 1/2, GunBuster, Inu Yasha etc with occasional nude scenes of teens would have to be edited or banned. Possession of unedited works could result in arrest, conviction and jail time.

What is being objected to is the expansion of the definition of child porn, child here being anyone under 18, to anime and manga. Presently the definition applies to photographs and films of actual minors.

Okay, okay, stop right there. You think Strike Witches exists only to provide fap material to otakus? Pardon my French, but that's a load of shit.

Moving on from my own personal opinions, this law does not mean there's going to be less 15 year old characters in anime. It means that several of the gags that make 15 year old characters funny (AKA characters like Kouta Tsuchiya, the "ninja pervert" from Baka and Test) are in danger of being banned, and if they happens, hilarious series will be in trouble.

And that's just talking about sexual gags. Non-sexual nudity on underage characters is another issue. Hell, even Crayon Shin-chan might fall under this law if we've got crazy enough people on our planet, which I know we do.

The problem isn't that the politicians, and the proposed law in question, are intent on doing harm. They have the best of intentions ( See "Hell, The Road to." for further illumination. ) regarding what they are doing.

The problem is that at first you end up fighting over what the law will use as a standard. Once this process begins you almost invariably end up with a law that does things that no one ever intended it do.

It's better on the whole to error on the side of less regulation, and tightly defined controlled regulation at that.

Sadly the folks in Japan don't have any better luck with this than my local politicians here in the US do.

I would also love not not have moe-lolis-unrefined-fanservice, and plenty more mature, sexy women, BUT I want it to be a natural process, not one prohibited by law but by fans that finally get how shallow, how pointless and how bad taste that is.

@partysmores: angelmcazares is not wrong to say out load the over sexualization of certain anime/manga. Intended fapping material undoubtedly.

But yea, dont want it to be prohibited because I dont like myself.

You're operating under the assumption that after the industry has lost doujinshi, most of the actual selling merchandise out there and its otaku fanbase, that anime itself will be profitable enough to warrant making more "mature" series. Yep, they're going to make entire anime series with "mature" content aimed at people who don't like anime without any intentions of selling any merchandise for the sake of selling a couple of 50$ complete box set for series no one knows about except otaku, who will no longer be buying them Rolling Eyes

The other spectrum of the fanbase would be teens, which is part of why many shows take place in high schools. But yeah, I'm sure you're right, teens will love to watch series with characters of the working class that have nothing to do with them and with whom they can't relate at all. And knowing how chaste teens are, I'm certain that if series do take place in high schools, they will love that new conservative "all teens are saints" attitude series will have.

That's also bad on principle, even if it turns out to work in your favor in some cases, as it allows for tyranny of the majority

Yes it would as those guys are still in high school. People who favor this keep harping on the "lolis", but any character depicted or perceived or judged to be under 18 would make your work "child" porn.

Raise the age of all characters that look younger than 18 and make them all officially 18 years old. Problem solved.

I do wonder how this law would work for chibi characters or the many anime characters that could pass as underaged even if their actual age is over 18.

Most anime I come across these days is based around high-school kids though so it might be difficult to write around that.
