On its website, searching the catalog for BR releases brings up only Mawaru Penguindrum and Tiger and Bunny. I've searched in vain to get some measure of BR player penetration in AU, but all the data I can find are in proprietary consulting reports.
Mononoke and Dennou Coil both seemed strong candidates for BR releases. There are Japanese BR versions of both shows so there are already masters available. Is the market for BR releases in general, and BR anime releases in particular, so thin that likely sales volumes will not cover costs? Are the Japanese producers not licensing BR versions for fear of reverse importatation (less an issue for Australia which is in a different BR region from Japan)? The large number of BR releases in the US, which compete directly against domestic Japanese releases, makes me think this isn't the problem for AU licensors. |
I think it's the extra production costs and the narrower market - if a release isn't too likely to be a strong seller, it might not be feasible to burden the production of both and the market loss from no BD is negligible while the DVD-only crowd is much larger.

Over here in the UK, there have been an increasing number of co-authored BluRays with Australian and British companies working together to share costs, since Oz and the UK share a BluRay region code. MVM and Hanabee are coauthoring Bakemonogatari for example, and I think MVM's impending release of Kids on the Slope may also have been a co-effort with Australia too.

If this isn't big news. I don't know what is.

Indeed, that totally rocks! Whether or not I buy all of these or just 2-5 depends on how they split up the sets though since I have the R1 set for Season 1 from VIZ's trainwrecked release of the series already.

Mind Game is no longer listed for sale on Madman Entertainment's site.
Sites like Chaos.com and EzyDVD still have listed for sale (though with the 'Expected to ship within 7-10 days' blurb).
