I'm not trying to stretch any definition, that is exactly what the law of the countries mentioned states.

Just because the laws might fail common sense doesn't topple the argument I made.

The law may "fail" common sense but its still the law, there is no way around it. He broke the law of that country so he has to face the consequences.

I would expect the same thing if I went to a country where it is illegal to be gay and started eating the face off another gay in public - no matter how ridiculous it is that I could be imprisoned for kissing another man - I would expect a prison sentence as it is a crime.

If you went to country where it is illegal to be gay I don't think you would severe prison sentence. I'm sorry to break this to you but you would most likely wind up dead.

Ha most likely very true - Rule of thumb, know a countries laws and don't break them no matter how outrageous they may be... You may end up dead

As dumb as this law is, it is still the law of the country. And even if I find it preposterous for somebody to go the jail for some harmless child porn drawings, that person is partially responsible of his own fate because of his ignorance.

True enough, this is why I do not if never reveal my power level in public.

That's a really dumb and extremely dangerous argument to make. You are saying that if guys who read Lolicon Manga cannot get their "fix" from the Manga then they will go abuse real children. That's simply not true. And it is such a very dangerous argument because you paint guys who read Lolicon Manga as being savage beasts who can only barely contain their urges with the help of pornographic Manga. That sort of sentiment actually harms more than it helps, because it reinforces the idea in the public that Lolicons are essentially paedophiles anyway and deserve to be locked up.

While the argument is dumb, it appears to be anecdotal. Unless I'm misreading, Aoi Yuuki Fanboy just outright admitted that he is a pedophile which makes this whole thing much more uncomfortable.

I hope for his sake he ment he doesn't need adult porn due to the amount of hentai he owns and was using that as an example for his argument rather than how it sounded...

Lolicon =/= paedophile. And I took his statement - that he doesn't need the "real thing" because he has Hentai Manga - to be simply a bad choice of wording, though I'll admit it did concern me.

----------

On another note, here is an ANN news article that says there is no discernible/detectable link between looking at drawings and abusing real children. I applaud the Danish researchers for relying on hard data rather than misguided emotion when examining the issue.

Ugh, this again. Long time readers know my opinion on the subject already, but for those of you who are new...

I personally find lolicon pornography to be very disturbing, but I don't think that "disturbing imagery," no matter what the subject, should be banned for being disturbing. I am very much against obscenity laws and the like. As long as there is no hard proof that virtual child pornography encourages actual child abuse (and the current majority of research suggests the exact opposite), and no actual children are being harmed in the production of said material, it should not be illegal.

Think about it, we allow graphic depictions of child murders.... but as long as they aren't pornographic, they're okay. They're okay because they are fiction, and no child is actually being hurt in the production of said imagery. The same standard should be applied across the board.

Christopher Macdonald
Just my opinion...

I don't know about NZ specifically, but most countries allow their customs units to search your laptops, cellphones, cameras and any other digital media you may be travelling with.

Dtm42 is correct, also the Lolicon entry on the main Wikipedia site goes into quite extensive detail about separating the definition between lolicon and pedophile (and the various types). I suggest anyone who is still unclear about it or in general has the attitude "that stuff is sick and anyone who likes it should be locked up" should give that article a read.

I think the laws that dictated the actions of the authorities in this New Zealand case could use some revamping. They may be laws and have been put in place because of the culture and whatever that society has determined is ethically appropriate, but I'm also seeing a trend of misguidedness through laws that don't reflect a dedicated concern for the groups those laws are intended to protect.

To me your two sentences here completely contradict each other, but I could be misreading. In particular what you said first acknowledges that there is a point in the context despite the argument being faulty, and that's all we can discern from it. But then you point out that context actually reveals that AYF is a criminal (via quite a fallacious logical leap that lolicon=pedophile). Sorry for trying to break apart the meaning behind what you said (maybe inaccurately) but it's kind of bothering me.

There is no jump in logic. Aoi Yuuki Fanboy opens his statement with admitting to be a lolicon. He closes his statement with not needing to look at "the real thing" because of hentai. The only presumption I'm making is that the hentai he's referencing is lolicon hentai because he stated he's a lolicon. His entire post is about how pedophiles can use lolicon as an outlet.

Thus, I came to the conclusion that his argument is anecdotal because he used himself as an example. He states he doesn't need to look at the "real thing" because of his lolicon hentai collection. Presuming that, if he did not have his lolicon hentai collection, he would need to look at the real thing. The hentai is his personal diversion from that.

However, I would never extend this one example as a representation of the entire group (people who look at lolicon).

I don't really know how to feel about this, a guy in our forums openly admitted to being a pedophile?! He is using loli/shota hentai to channel that away??? I don't know how to feel about this at all, I just don't know..
