This poll is totally pointless if it doesn't say what they are an otaku of. This is basically asking "Do you have a hobby you love?"

Star hunters with expensive light buckets are astronomy otaku. Tetsu with expensive cameras, timetables, and model trains are railfans. Taking hobbies seriously to the point of obsession is a national passtime.

If it's to the point of obsession, then no I don't think I qualify.

"Self Identified" Otaku may not actually mean real Otaku.

Unsurprising, since the term otaku gets thrown around to even mean something along the lines of "you like something I think is wierd/horrible, in a way I find objectionable". It's a wide net and it was only a matter of time for people to think it might not be such a horrible thing to be called.
Relatively new words are defined by how you use them, not by whatever horrible thoughts reside in your head when you speak them.

Otaku must be one of the most misinterpreted words alongside Moe and Emo. People just spam it without understanding if it is the correct word.

The term you're looking for is "sample bias".

But why has no one noticed the most horrifically obvious error.

From the results, 42.2% of the respondents considered themselves otaku while 57.8% did not. |

Suggests the table in the post is wrong.
I agree more data on "what kind of otaku" would be interesting.
